CLIMARTE - Arts for a Safe Climate, 120 Bridge Road, Melbourne (2026)

CLIMARTE harnesses the creative power of the Arts to inform, engage and inspire action on the Climate Emergency by:

1. Producing, promoting and facilitating climate-focussed Arts events.
2. Providing a forum for the exchange of ideas and information on sustainable Arts practice at an individual and organisational level.
3. Creating an alliance of Arts practitioners and organisations that advocate for immediate, effective and creative action on the Climate Emergency. Throughout history the arts have played a major role in recording and reflecting the state of human society and its relationship with the natural world. Indeed, for some historical periods it is only through the arts that we have been able to learn about our past. But sometimes we have also needed the arts to be a catalyst for change, a call to action, a pricking of humanity’s collective conscience. This is an invitation to join others who work, live and play in the arts in taking a stand. It is time for us to come together, as representatives of all that is creative, imaginative and hopeful in humanity. It is time for us to engage with our communities and our leaders, our peers and our audiences. It is time to let them know that we will act and that we expect them to act on this clear and present danger to humanity, and to the wondrous world we inhabit. It is time to have our voices heard on the Climate Emergency.

In this workshop, you are invited to shape the next version of BILYA - an open, collaborative mapping platform grounded in Indigenous culture and knowledge systems. Designed to connect individuals and groups working at the crossroads of climate action, social justice, culture ad the arts, this workshop focuses on generating ideas and sharing knowledge to support practice change, resource sharing and deeper collaboration across sectors.

Just to outline a little more about the opportunity to attend the talk coming up this Sunday the 1st of June at 2pm ‘CAN ART SAVE A PLANET’ at the Coolroom, Northern Arts Hotel, Castlemaine, Victoria.
It is a rare opportunity to hear these speakers in one session. They will be showing their work and inviting much discussion with the audience
Dale Cox is a local artist, represented by Australian Galleries, and in Dale’s words he feels “that there is an innate understanding within all individuals that we need to re imagine our relationships with the natural world” His artwork does this in wonderful ways (see pic). He says “true art can be seen as a unique, safe space to explore tricky complicated, complex and often confronting themes”. Dale will discuss the effect of his work. Jodi Newcombe is a ‘culture shifter’ and analyses economic culture and the problems that come from that, plus alternatives to it. She has been integral to creating the new currency concept for Castlemaine, the silver wattle, seen here. Jo will discuss what can happen with a community rises to thwart an environmental disaster on its doorstep, showing how art plays a part in keeping this dream alive (pic is her ‘listening stones’ work in Westernport), and Mark Ogge, a Principal Advisor to the Australia Institute, and an artist in his own right, whose expertise is climate and energy issues. He is very clear and outspoken on the issues facing us. Seen here in a recent social media monologue about gas mining in Australia.
