A shared table, a good cup of tea and decades of service to celebrate.

Last week, the Mercy Health community came together for Mercy Day, with gatherings across our hospitals, aged care homes and Support Services. There were generous spreads of food, time to catch up with colleagues and opportunities to recognise the people who bring our mission to life.

In Albury, Mercy Health Albury and Mercy Place Albury held a joint celebration with six Sisters of Mercy in attendance. Among those recognised were two staff members who have each given 40 years of service.

At Mercy Place Boronia, Lisa was recognised for 20 years of work in lifestyle and pastoral care, and chef Sandra for 25 years. Support Services also celebrated staff service milestones alongside its Mercy Day gathering.

Mercy Day commemorates Catherine McAuley’s opening of the first House of Mercy in Dublin in 1827. This year begins the lead-up to its 200th anniversary — a chance to reflect on that legacy of hospitality, compassion and care, and the people who continue it today.

Thank you to everyone who helped bring these celebrations together, and to all our staff recognised for their years of service.

Life doesn’t stop when dementia starts.

Last week, during Dementia Action Week, Ben Gatehouse shared how person-centred care can help people living with dementia maintain their identity, independence and quality of life.

It begins with knowing the person: their history, interests, routines and what makes a good day for them. That knowledge can turn an everyday care task into an opportunity for choice, purpose and human connection.

Ben shared his insights with Australian Ageing Agenda and Catholic Health Australia’s Health Matters podcast.

Mercy Day reminds us that care and connection often start with a genuine encounter with one another.

This year holds special significance as we begin the journey towards the 200th anniversary of our founder Catherine McAuley's first House of Mercy, opened in Dublin in 1827.

Catherine's invitation to share "a good cup of tea" was about more than a warm drink. It was about creating space for conversation, connection, belonging and support, no matter who was on the other side of the door.

On Mercy Day, we pause from the busyness of life and make time for relationships and hospitality.

For people living with dementia, mental stimulation is about so much more than keeping the mind active. It can help support emotional regulation, reduce feelings of anxiety and frustration, encourage connection, and create moments of joy, purpose and engagement.

Through Mercy Health Foundation Memory Matters Appeal, we're raising funds for specialised equipment and resources, including tools such as the Brain Trainer, designed to provide cognitive stimulation and meaningful activities for residents living with dementia.

These programs can help residents stay engaged, maintain important cognitive skills and experience an improved quality of life, while supporting their overall wellbeing.
