Did you know that Congenital cytomegalovirus, or CMV, is a preventable virus?

Most expectant parents have never heard of congenital CMV, but it’s one of the most common infections passed to babies during pregnancy.

In Australia, around 1 in 300 babies are affected, with some facing lifelong challenges like hearing loss, vision impairment and developmental delay. The good news? Many cases can be prevented with simple awareness and hygiene measures.

Researchers like Professor Lisa Hui at Perinatal are leading this work with the help of Mercy Health Foundation to improve prevention, detection and care, helping give more babies a healthy start and more families peace of mind.

As Refugee Week comes to a close with World Refugee Day, it is an opportunity to acknowledge that our Mercy Health community is proudly made up of patients, clients, residents, staff, family and friends from diverse backgrounds, some of whom have faced great adversity in finding a safe home.

At Mercy Hospital for Women and Werribee Mercy Hospital, teams came together this week to share stories, celebrate culture and recognise the strength and resilience of refugee communities. At both sites, staff contributed fruit and water as a reminder of the lived experience of many refugees who have experienced deprivation of food and clean water.

Staff also contributed fruit and water as a reminder of the lived experience of many refugees who have experienced deprivation of food and clean water.

Leadership can start with a simple decision to step forward.

Recently, Mercy Health celebrated 28 staff members graduating from the Diploma of Leadership and Management — including Mercy Health Albury’s Fiona Hogg, who shared a heartfelt reflection on how the experience changed the way she leads and connects with her team.

Fiona spoke about creating “communication bubbles” activities with staff that encouraged quieter voices to contribute more confidently during team discussions, helping build stronger connections and understanding across the department.

“It was such a powerful reminder that genuine connection fills the gaps where miscommunication once lived.”

Congratulations to Fiona and all of this year’s graduates on this achievement and their commitment to continued learning and growth.

There’s something special about going behind the scenes at Mercy Health! Recently, an incredible group of staff came together to share their career stories.

From what first attracted them to Mercy Health, to what keeps them here, each story offered a genuine glimpse into the people who make our organisation what it is.

They spoke openly about what flexibility really looks like in their roles and even reflected on what they would tell their younger selves starting out in their careers. We can’t wait to share these stories with you soon!

Mercy Health warmly congratulates Elisa McDonald on her appointment as Victoria’s first Chief Midwife, a significant milestone for maternity care and the midwifery profession across the state.

With the Mercy Perinatal Global Midwifery Update 2026 commencing tomorrow, this announcement adds further momentum to important conversations shaping the future of maternity care in Victoria and beyond. We look forward to the leadership and impact this role will bring in advancing maternity care across Victoria.

Leanne Mills, Mercy Health’s Chief Nursing and Midwifery Officer, said:

“The establishment of a Chief Midwife role is a significant and positive step for maternity care in Victoria. It highlights the importance of midwifery leadership in shaping policy and practice, and we welcome the opportunity to work collaboratively to support the best possible outcomes for women, babies and families.”

We welcome this important step forward and remain committed to supporting initiatives that strengthen the voice of midwives and improve care for the communities we serve.

We welcome the Victorian Government’s $8.1 million investment in maternity care, extending the Neonatal Postnatal Support Nurse Program at Werribee Mercy Hospital, and now expanding it to Mercy Hospital for Women in Heidelberg, helping more mums and babies stay together in those precious early moments of life.

This funding means more families can stay close while babies receive the extra care they need in those first critical days, while providing registered nurses with hands-on experience in newborn care and exposure to midwifery.

This , we're highlighting the work of Professor Lisa Hui, whose research is helping transform how congenital CMV is detected, prevented and treated in early pregnancy.

CMV is common, preventable and still largely unknown — yet in Australia, 1 in 300 babies is born with CMV.

With greater awareness, earlier screening and the right treatment pathways, we can help protect more babies and support more families. Donate now https://bit.ly/42uo83B
