Are you okay is a very important question. ❤️Heart surgery patients need some tending loving care for their minds, as well as their mended hearts.

Our special volunteers include team members who have their own mended heart histories - and have the empathetic role of visiting recovering heart surgery patients.

Two of our team received a special delivery of hand made felt hearts that we give to patients we visit.

Heartbeat Epworth visits patients, raises funds for equipment, education, scholarships for medical staff and more. This beautiful community of volunteers who are so grateful for their lives after being heart patients themselves are happy to give back.

Donations, raffles, wonderful handmade items for sale, including their rather famous handmade footy beanies, and more are all part of their mighty efforts.

POV: Someone you love has had open heart surgery. Such a scary time and you’re supported by the efforts of wonderful volunteers from the Heartbeat Epworth Inc - as well as excellent nurses, doctors and support staff.

I’m sharing this personal perspective, just a snippet of my time as a partner of someone who was recovering from open heart surgery.

A very scary time, as the unknown often is, and I was touched to find this beautiful and as it happens sun filled room to have a little respite from bedside realities.

I was grateful and touched by all of the efforts by volunteers. The evidence was in the room. I was further appreciative of the bedside visits that my partner received from Heartbeat Epworth volunteers.

It meant so much to him because the volunteers themselves were former patients and utterly relatable.

A wonderful comfort.

A generous and truly heartfelt comfort.

I was in the hospital a lot.

I could see there were many patients without so much support - and they got it from Heartbeat volunteers. Unsurprisingly it brought tears to my eyes at the time.

So here I am some seven months later. My partner is very well after a big recovery and we are so grateful and happy and now I’m proudly adding Heartbeat Epworth to my client portfolio, but this time as a volunteer myself.

Just giving back a very small effort in comparison but I am very proud to share how important their work is.

🎉 Raffle Winners Announced! 🎉

Last week, Heartbeat Richmond Coordinator Margo Kelly, with the help of volunteers Julie and Simar, drew the winning tickets for our Quilt Raffle and Healthy Heart Hamper.

Congratulations to our lucky winners, who have both now collected their prizes and were delighted!

Together, these raffles raised an incredible $3,625, with all proceeds going towards the Heartbeat Epworth Brookes Academy Cardiac Nurse Scholarship, supporting the future of cardiac care.

Our special volunteers who visit patients in the cardiology ward are precious. There’s nothing like looking someone in the eye who gets what you’re experiencing.

They’ve walked your path and their reassurance is golden. 💛

So are these lovely little bags gifted during the visits.

Okay, now that we have your attention - this post is a complete tease… except for one lucky person who may have in their possession Ticket Number 1082!

We had our 2026 Heartbeat Epworth Mother’s Day Raffle… and due to a technical error (oops!) we don’t have a photo to show of said hamper… but we can share that it was a biggy!

More than $1,500 of wonderful, delicious, beauty inducing, feel good treats including a bottle of superb w**e from huge supporters of Heartbeat Epworth, Levantine Hill / 😍

We’re so grateful and delighted to share that more than $6,000 was raised by our dedicated volunteers who generously gave their time to sell tickets and put together an AMAZING hamper filled with generous contributions and gifts.

The raffle has been done, drawn, winner notified - all in time for Mother’s Day.

We’re feeling happy (and no, it’s not because we’ve been sipping superb w**e full of antioxidants) but because we’ve successfully raised more funds for some very important purposes, close to many, many, many hearts. 🥰

All raffle proceeds will contribute towards Heartbeat Epworth’s $100,000 donation to fund a major upgrade of the GE Cardiac Monitoring System and four Telemetry Units for Cato 3 at Epworth Richmond.

This vital equipment helps deliver the highest standard of care for cardiac patients.

The advanced monitoring system continuously tracks heart rhythms, vital signs and clinical changes, allowing doctors and nurses to respond more quickly, communicate more effectively, and support timely intervention when every second matters.

Telemetry units also allow patients to move more freely around the ward while remaining safely monitored remotely, supporting both recovery and comfort during what can be a very vulnerable time.

The people behind some big dollars - and what that really means. You’re looking at an amazing group of volunteers who have helped raise $60,000, alongside generous donations from our members, this year alone.

Grateful former Epworth cardiac patients supporting Heartbeat at Epworth Richmond. These are the people who quietly, consistently, put in the work. Fundraising, organising, showing up, visiting cardiac patients.

Our target is $100,000. We’ve pledged that amount towards upgrading the cardiac patient monitoring system on Ward Cato 3 at Epworth Richmond, the dedicated cardiac inpatient ward.

That’s this year’s goal. We have many years and fundraising experience behind us.

The 7 figure kind.

And yes, they are big numbers. Really big.

But what happens to those numbers? … they don’t just sit.

They turn into equipment. They turn into opportunities. They turn into knowledge.

They turn into scholarships that send nurses and medical staff out into the world to learn from international leaders… and then bring that knowledge straight back to their colleagues and patient bedsides.

From a patient and family perspective… that matters more than can properly be put into words.

Memories are long from the bedside. ICU. Upstairs in the Cato 3 Cardiac Ward. Watching the staff in action. Watching the consistency of care, the skill, the teamwork.

Knowing that if they weren’t doing it right… It’s a huge responsibility.

While full of admiration and gratitude, what you’re understandably not thinking of at the time … is how much of that confidence, that capability, that calm teamwork… is built on years of learning, sharing, growing …and scholarships.
