National Reconciliation Week (NRW) gives us all the opportunities to learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievements, and learn together and explore how each of us contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.

Particularly, we are reminded that reconciliation begins with listening; to people, to place and to Country.

As part of Fresh Hope Communities’ Reflect: Reconciliation Action Plan, our work over the past year has focused on learning and listening. We have been taking time to understand what respectful engagement with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples looks like, recognising that trust and right relationship grow slowly and need care and commitment.

Jared Naidoo, Fresh Hope Communities’ Social Impact and Funding Lead, explains how we are practically outworking this as an organisation.

Cedar on Collins Retirement Community brought Kiama together once again for its third annual Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea in support of The Cancer Council - a heartfelt gathering joined by MPs Katelin McInerney and Serena Copley, inspiring guest speakers, and a community determined to make a difference.

This year’s event was filled with powerful stories, generosity and moments that moved the room.

The event would not have been possible without our generous local sponsors: Endota Spa, Kiama Leagues Club, Dovida Home Care, The Sea and Beau, Keith Borland, Tiny Homes Joadja, BillyJo Kiama, Silica Restaurant and Indigo Rose Home Living.

Thank you also to our wonderful staff who coordinated and delivered this fantastic event.

As National Volunteer week continues, Fresh Hope Communities celebrates Janice, whose music and compassion bring joy and connection to Borella House. Her story is an inspiring reminder of the power of volunteering in community. It’s also a reminder to all of us that the gifts, talents or skills we all possess can make a difference in the lives of others.

Happy International Nurses Day to all those who serve in this critical profession across all our communities.

Our new General Manager of Residential Services, Nick Jones, shared this to our nursing staff at Fresh Hope Communities:

“International Nurses Day is truly a special day in our sector and in healthcare across the globe.

Millions of people serve day in and day out, tirelessly and selflessly as nurses, and it’s a profession that the world cannot possibly do without.

I have only been with Fresh Hope Communities for a handful of weeks but what I have observed are nurses who go beyond the clinical care they provide to show up each day as compassionate caregivers, light bearers and joy bringers; people who are trusted by our residents and their families and the greater community to bring dignity and comfort with the highest quality of care.

So, this International Nurses Day, on behalf of all of us at Fresh Hope Communities, a heartfelt thank you for everything you do to make the lives of those you serve better, for ensuring that they receive the care they deserve and doing it with professionalism, kindness, optimism and unwavering dedication.”

For over 20 years, The Tops has partnered with Southern Cross Kids Camps (SCKC) to host camps for at-risk primary-aged children in vulnerable living situations. Many having experienced cyclical abuse, neglect and a host of other challenging issues. Many live in foster care, moving from home to home, lacking the stability and care needed to feel safe and secure. The camps are designed to interrupt these patterns, bringing respite in the form of fun and laughter back into their lives and help them develop the tools they need to build confidence, value, self-esteem and trust.

In April, 22 campers arrived at Stanwell Tops for camp and had the time of their lives. From Archery and outdoor games in bright sunshine to indoor fun, there was a lot to lift their spirits and remind them of what it’s like to enjoy life to the full.

We’re grateful to be able to partner with the SCKC team, the churches and all the sponsors, donors and providers to make this possible for these incredible kids.
