Thanks so much to everyone who came out yesterday to spend their Sunday collecting Rubbish. And a big shout out to a special girl, Ella, who chose to spend her 7th birthday contributing to making her neighbourhood a cleaner place, along with her friends.

We had some great helping hands to sort through a few of the bags so we could see what kinds of things get left behind.

Together, we collected 12 large bags of rubbish and 7 bags of recycling. We saw a lot of:

fast food takeaway containers and wrappers
chip wrappers
dog poo bags
plastic bottle caps
straws
micro plastics
and a few articles of clothing, including thongs and other shoes

Anyone can get involved in our Sustainable Neighbourhood Group and stay updated on future events and news. Just DM us your email address and we'll add you to our e-newsletter, or be sure to follow our page.

Thanks again for the great turnout and effort!

🌱 Seed Library Launch at Redhead Community Library 🌼

Join us on Saturday 17 January 2026 to celebrate the launch of Lake Macquarie’s 6th Seed Library at Redhead Community Library. This free, family-friendly afternoon is a chance to learn, create, and connect around growing local food and sharing seeds in our community.

From 1:30–2:30pm, The Groundswell Collective will lead a hands-on Seed Saving Techniques Workshop, sharing practical tips on collecting, storing, and sharing seeds to support resilient home gardens and local biodiversity. Whether you’re new to seed saving or looking to build your skills, this session is designed to be accessible and inspiring.

From 2:30–3:30pm, stay on for creative activities for families, including potato printing and making seed balls—a playful way for children and adults alike to connect with nature and take something home to plant or share.

Proudly supported by Redhead Sustainable Neighbourhood Group, The Groundswell Collective, and Origin Energy, this event celebrates community-led sustainability and the simple power of seeds to bring people together.

Redhead Community Library, 2 Hutchinson St Redhead

Free event - All are welcome - no experience needed.

♻️ National Recycling Week ♻️ November 10th - 16th 2025

Lake Macquarie residents are encouraged to 'Join the Cycle' as part of Planet Ark's National Recycling Week. Reducing waste not only keeps valuable materials out of landfill, it also benefits the environment by reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Join the Cycle in 2025 and keep reducing, reusing, repurposing, recycling and more at home and as part of your community!

Check out the useful council A-Z guide on how you can dispose of common household items plus other ways you can keep waste out of landfill and give it a second life: https://www.lakemac.com.au/For-residents/Waste-and-recycling/A-Z-waste-and-recycling-guide

Remember the Belmont North Community Recycling Centre is now open and a safe way to dispose of problem household waste, free of charge: https://www.lakemac.com.au/For-residents/Waste-and-recycling/Belmont-North-Community-Recycling-Centre

Since 1996, we've been helping Aussies recycle by sharing knowledge, education, events and inspiring stories. Over the past 29 odd years, the recycling rate in Australia has gone from 7% and just 1.5 million total tonnes recycled to over 60% and 43 million tonnes of materials recycled. Per person, t...
