Have your say on Tasmania’s next Road Safety Strategy!

Public consultation is now open on the Discussion Paper for Tasmania’s next Road Safety Strategy.

At Driver Mentoring Tasmania, we believe Learner Driver Mentoring Programs have a crucial role to play in building safer roads, stronger communities and reducing barriers to licensing.

Every day, LDMPs support learner drivers to gain supervised driving experience, build confidence and develop safe driving habits before they progress to independent driving. This support is essential because they do not have access to a suitable vehicle, supervising driver or professional lessons to progress through the licensing system.

This consultation is an important opportunity for Tasmanians to share their experiences, priorities, challenges and ideas, including the role community-based programs can play in supporting safe and equitable access to licensing.

Some people do more than coordinate a program. They build it, open doors, and leave a lasting mark on their community.

After more than 10 years as coordinator of the L2P program at Northern Suburbs Community Centre, Mani is finishing up in his coordinator role. It is impossible to describe how much he has contributed in those years.

Mani has been part of the program from both sides. Before becoming coordinator, he was a volunteer mentor himself. That experience shaped the way he supported learners, mentors and the community: with patience, understanding and a belief in what the program can do for people.

Mani has been the strength of L2P. Lots of mentors joined because of Mani, and learners felt ready to take the next step because of the time and care he invested with them before they even got behind the wheel.

Mani will be missed in the coordinator role, but we are very glad he is not leaving the program completely. He will continue supporting L2P as a volunteer mentor and is starting supervising a learner who has been waiting 12 months for the opportunity to get started.

Getting a licence changes a person’s life. It opens opportunities to work, study, family responsibilities, connection and independence.

Mani will continue to make a difference, just from a different role.
