And that's exactly why coordinated control works — and acting alone doesn't.

When pest animals move freely across the landscape, the only approach that delivers meaningful, lasting results is landholders working together. The more properties that are prepared and able to participate in coordinated baiting, the greater the chance of achieving real reductions in pest numbers across the whole region.

A Restricted Chemical Permit (RCP) puts you in a position to respond when it matters most — at the first sign of activity, not after losses have already occurred.

SBG is currently covering the permit cost for eligible landholders who apply through the Group. There is no better time to get this in place.

🐾 RESTRICTED CHEMICAL PERMIT (RCP) CAMPAIGN NOW OPEN

The Southern Biosecurity Group is encouraging all landholders across our operating area to ensure they have a current Restricted Chemical Permit (RCP) in place — and right now, we will cover the cost for eligible applicants who apply through the Group.

An RCP gives you the authority to undertake timely baiting when wild dog or fox activity is detected on your property. When attacks, sightings or signs of activity occur, delays in accessing suitable control options can mean further livestock losses — and pest animals that continue to move through neighbouring properties.

Obtaining your RCP helps support:

✅ Faster responses to wild dog activity and livestock attacks
✅ Timely and effective baiting when pest activity is identified
✅ Greater participation in coordinated wild dog and fox control programs
✅ Improved protection of livestock and agricultural production
✅ Reduced pest pressure across neighbouring properties
✅ A stronger whole-of-region approach to declared pest management

An RCP can also open opportunities to participate in coordinated fox control programs, helping reduce predation pressure on livestock, poultry and native fauna.

🌿 HELP SHAPE BIOSECURITY IN OUR REGION — JOIN THE SBG COMMITTEE 🐕🐇🌵

The Southern Biosecurity Group is looking for new Committee members from across the Ravensthorpe region.

Our Committee plays an important role in guiding the Group's work and helping ensure coordinated declared pest animal and plant control continues across our Shire. The commitment is small — but the benefit to our region is significant.

✅ Only 4 meetings per year
✅ Help guide pest control priorities across the Shire
✅ Provide valuable local knowledge about problem areas
✅ Assist with approving budgets, annual reports and strategic plans
✅ No need to carry out operational work yourself

The day-to-day operations of SBG are managed by our Executive Officer, who coordinates programs, contractors, reporting and project delivery. Control works are planned in advance and undertaken by suitably qualified contractors and partner organisations.

What we need from Committee members is local knowledge, community representation and input into where our efforts are best directed.

The more representation we have from different areas of the Shire, the better we can target control programs where they are most needed — whether that involves wild dogs, foxes, rabbits, declared w**ds, cactus or other declared species.

You do not need to be a biosecurity expert to join. If you are a landholder, farmer, community group representative, local business owner, environmental volunteer or simply someone who cares about protecting our region, we would love to hear from you.

Strong Committee membership is essential to ensuring SBG can continue operating and delivering coordinated pest management programs into the future.

Spring rain and rising soil temperatures are creating ideal establishment conditions for declared w**d species across the shire. Acting before w**ds set seed is the most cost-effective strategy — and the window is now.

Species to monitor in our region:
• Drooping Prickly Pear (pictured) — actively flowering and spreading in rocky and disturbed areas
• Bridal Creeper — extending through remnant vegetation along fence lines and roadsides
• Other declared species — check DPIRD identification resources if unsure

Practical steps you can take this week:
✅ Walk fence lines, creek banks, and disturbed soil areas
✅ Treat infestations before seed set — spray, chop, or hand-pull where practical
✅ Record locations for follow-up assessment

Warmer conditions and increased livestock movement make spring one of the highest-risk periods for wild dog attacks in the Shire of Ravensthorpe.

🚨 CAN YOU HELP US GET OUR WILD DOG DISPLAY TRAILER BACK TO RAVENSTHORPE? 🚨

The Southern Biosecurity Group’s Wild Dog Display Trailer is currently in Merredin, and we’re looking for anyone who may be travelling from Merredin, through the area, or even part of the way toward Ravensthorpe who could help move it closer to home.

You do not need to be travelling all the way to Ravensthorpe — if you can assist with just one leg of the journey, please get in touch. We may be able to coordinate the trailer handover with another person along the route.

🚙 SBG will reimburse reasonable transport costs associated with helping return the trailer.
