🌾 WHY YOUR INPUT ON THE DPR MATTERS

The Declared Pest Rate isn't just a levy β€” it's the foundation of coordinated biosecurity across the Shire of Ravensthorpe.

HOW IT WORKS:
β€’ Funds raised locally through the DPR are matched by government support
β€’ Every dollar contributed by landholders is amplified in the field
β€’ The rate determines the scale of wild dog, fox, and w**d control programs across all land types in our region

When we review the DPR, we're setting the direction for pest management for years to come. Landholders who are most affected should be the ones shaping that direction.

WHO SHOULD CONTRIBUTE?
β€’ Pastoral and farming property owners
β€’ Anyone managing declared pests on their land
β€’ Landholders who want effective, coordinated biosecurity in the Shire

Your knowledge of local conditions is something no state-wide agency can replicate. Use it.

πŸ” GET YOUR RESTRICTED CHEMICAL PRODUCT PERMIT β€” AND DO IT WITH US

If you're using or planning to use 1080 baits for wild dog or fox control, you need a Restricted Chemical Product (RCP) permit. No permit, no access to the most effective tools on the market.

Here's the thing β€” you don't have to navigate that process alone.

SBG can assist Ravensthorpe landholders in obtaining their RCP permit, keeping it local, supported, and connected to the pest programs already running in your area.

WHY COME THROUGH SBG?

βœ… Local expertise β€” we know the declared pest pressures in your area, not just the paperwork
βœ… Coordination β€” your permit ties directly into our regional baiting and pest control programs
βœ… Access to subsidised bait β€” permit holders through SBG can tap into subsidised 1080 bait supplies
βœ… Ongoing support β€” a trusted, local point of contact for questions before, during, and after the process

This isn't just about ticking a box. It's about getting the right tools in your hands, backed by a team that understands what's happening on the ground in Ravensthorpe.

🌡 CACTUS ALERT. Spring is the worst time to fall behind.

Flowering cactus means one thing. Seeds are coming, and a small patch can become a paddock problem faster than you think.

With warm conditions building across the Shire, now is the critical window to inspect your property and act before plants set seed.

πŸ” WHAT TO LOOK FOR
β€’ Flat, paddle-shaped pads with pink or red flower buds
β€’ New growth on previously treated areas
β€’ Spread along fence lines, creek banks, and disturbed ground

βœ… WHAT TO DO NOW
β€’ Walk your property and map any new infestations
β€’ Do not disturb or slash plants. This can spread viable material
β€’ Contact SBG to discuss control options, including Cochineal biocontrol and chemical treatment
β€’ Report new sightings so we can track spread across the Shire

PROJECT UPDATE
SBG's cactus management program is active this season. Landholders in priority areas may be eligible for coordinated support. Early engagement means better outcomes for your property and your neighbours.

Your land. Your legacy. Let's get on top of it together.

πŸ‡ August is prime rabbit season in the Ravensthorpe Shire.

Cooler mornings and softening soils mean fresh warrens are appearing across the district right now. If you're seeing increased activity on your property, you're not alone β€” and coordinated action is the most effective response.

SEASONAL PEST ALERT. AUGUST 2026

Key actions for landholders this month:

βœ” Check fence lines and paddock edges for fresh warren activity
βœ” Bait safely and legally. ensure you hold the required permits before using 1080
βœ” Coordinate with your neighbours. isolated control is far less effective
βœ” Record your observations. data helps us target resources across the Shire

WHY IT MATTERS

Rabbits compete directly with livestock for pasture, destabilise soils, and undermine revegetation efforts. A single unmanaged population can undo months of coordinated work across neighbouring properties.

SBG CAN HELP

We can assist with:
- Advice on legal baiting requirements and permit pathways
- Coordinating neighbour-to-neighbour programs in your area

πŸ‡ SEASONAL PEST ALERT: Rabbits are on the move.

Late winter is prime time for rabbit activity across the Shire. Green feed is drawing them out, populations are building, and the window to act before spring breeding is now.

Unchecked rabbits cause serious damage. Pasture loss, soil erosion, and compounding costs to your operation add up fast. Coordinated action across neighbouring properties is the most effective response.

HERE'S WHERE TO START:

1. Monitor and map activity on your property
2. Coordinate baiting dates with your neighbours
3. Contact SBG for local support, resources, and guidance

WHY COORDINATE?
Isolated baiting is far less effective than a landscape-scale approach SBG can help align timing and methods across your area Our local guide covers bait selection, timing, and compliance requirements

🌡 AUGUST ACTIVITY UPDATE. Cactus control progress in the Shire of Ravensthorpe.

This month our team completed targeted treatment of prickly pear infestations across several properties in the shire. Early intervention on established plants reduces the cost and effort of future control significantly.

ACTIVITY SUMMARY
- Properties inspected: 6
- Cactus plants treated: 340+
- Treatment method: Herbicide injection and foliar spray
- Follow-up monitoring: Scheduled for 6 weeks post-treatment

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR RATEPAYERS
Your declared pest rate contribution funds this coordinated work. Treating infestations at this scale on a property-by-property basis would cost individual landholders significantly more without the group program.

What does the Southern Biosecurity Group do with Declared Pest Rate funds?

Your rate contributions support coordinated declared pest and w**d control programs across the Shire of Ravensthorpe. This includes rabbit, fox and wild dog control, surveillance, w**d management and community engagement.

Effective biosecurity relies on coordinated action across property boundaries. We want the community to understand where funds go and why this work matters.
