Last week, our Jirrbal Rangers travelled to the coast to spend time on Jirrbal Country across the Coastal Plains with respected Jirrbal Elder and knowledge holder Aunty Phyllis Grant.

Being on Country is how culture is truly learned and understood.

This visit was about more than a trip β€” it was about the transmission of knowledge from Elder to the next generation.

Aunty Phyllis guided our young Rangers through the importance of tribal boundaries, shared language, and spoke about the cultural responsibilities connected to this part of Jirrbal Country.

Jirrbal Ranger Coordinator Joshua Henry shared that the Rangers were eager to learn, asking many questions throughout the day.

Our male trainee Ranger, Alexander Little, even carried a notebook to carefully write down the cultural knowledge and language being shared. This is how knowledge is respectfully passed on β€” by listening, recording, and carrying it forward.

It was also meaningful to have Girringun Rangers join the visit, including Traditional Owners who identify as Jirrbal. Learning together on Country created a strong and holistic approach to understanding Jirrbal Land, Language and Culture.

The most important part of this journey is ensuring our Rangers know the full Jirrbal footprint they will be working across.

By walking Country and learning directly from Elders, they are better prepared to carry out the cultural aspirations of their Elders and Jirrbal people β€” now and into the future.
