It was wonderful to have the opportunity to be part of the Parliamentary Friends of Financial Capability's inaugural event at Parliament House tonight. Tassie represented (not only us but Upturned Tasmania) thanks to the invitation from Senator Richard Dowling and your ongoing dedication to this important topic.

The panel discussions and conversations with others working in the sector created valuable opportunities for information sharing, connection and potential future collaboration.

I asked for a second table… and then found myself asking for a third! When you look at how much we have achieved in just one year, it really makes you realise what an incredible community we have that trust in what we do in our project.

Now that we’ve covered Tax File Numbers and given students the chance to complete their TFN application at school, or take a form home to complete later, we’re moving on to our next topic: bank accounts.

This is especially important for young people on the West Coast. We don’t have a local bank branch, so dealing with a bank can sometimes mean applying online, making phone calls, or travelling a long way, sometimes up to a 4-hour round trip.

The session is designed to help young people build the knowledge and confidence they need to manage their money and make informed choices..

We’ll use practical examples and scripts so students feel confident when approaching a bank.

Now that our Primary students have explored Needs vs Wants, our amazing School Program Facilitator, Donna, will be guiding them through the next step in their financial literacy journey: Opportunity Cost.

This helps students understand that every choice has a consequence. When we choose one thing, we often give up the opportunity to choose something else. It's a valuable skill that supports thoughtful decision-making and builds strong financial literacy foundations.

We thank our partners Tasmanian Community Fund and Bank of us Tasmania for supporting our project that helps us to deliver meaningful opportunities to young people across the West Coast.

Nothing like seeing the iconic West Coast Wilderness Railway roll by during today's Smart Kitchen Workshop in Queenstown! 🚂

Thank you to everyone who joined us across today's Queenstown session and last night's workshop in Zeehan. Participants probably don't realise it but they're local experts in practical, everyday kitchen skills that help households stretch the budget, reduce food waste and make every grocery shop go further. Through the conversations they'll have with friends, family, neighbours and colleagues, they'll naturally pass on ideas that support others.

A big thank you to TUSA Food Hub for delivering the workshops, Evans IGA Supermarket for generously donating the grocery hamper of goodies, and the New Beginnings Centre & Zeehan Neighbourhood Centre for providing the cosy spaces.
