Today, four Local Government Areas (LGAs) commence their Bush Fire Danger Periods, with Clarence Valley, Glen Innes Severn, Inverell and Tenterfield now requiring a fire permit.

Residents and landholders must ensure they understand the rules around the use of fire. In addition to obtaining the required fire permit, you must also notify your local fire authority and your neighbours of your intention to burn at least 24 hours in advance.

It’s important that you and your family understand the bush fire risk in your area. Take the time to have a conversation, create a Bush Fire Survival Plan and know what you'll do if threatened by fire.

The landscape is drying. Don’t let your burn become tomorrow’s emergency.

Attention Far South Coast residents – the Bush Fire Danger Period starts on 1 September.

From this date, you’ll need a Fire Permit to light fires in the open in addition to the current need to notify your intent.

Recent weeks have seen very little rainfall, and conditions are becoming increasingly dry. We’re also seeing a rise in escaped burns across the district, reminding us how quickly a small fire can get out of control.

Before you burn:
• Check the weather and wind conditions.
• Have adequate water and firefighting equipment ready.
• Never leave a burn unattended.
• Ensure your fire is fully extinguished before leaving.

A few extra minutes of preparation can prevent a fire from threatening lives, homes and the community.

🔥 Bush Fire Danger Period starts 1 September – Now is the time to prepare

While the Bush Fire Danger Period doesn’t begin on the Far South Coast until 1 September, the landscape is already drying out after limited recent rainfall, and conditions are becoming more favourable for fire.

Traditionally, August brings stronger winds to our region, increasing the risk of fires spreading quickly. We’ve also seen an increase in escaped burns recently, highlighting the need for everyone to take extra care when using fire.

From 1 September, you’ll need a Fire Permit to light fires during the Bush Fire Danger Period. If you’re planning to burn, you’ll also need to notify your neighbours and your local fire authority at least 24 hours before lighting up.

Now is the perfect time to:
• ✔️ Prepare or update your Bush Fire Survival Plan.
• ✔️ Clean up around your home and reduce fire hazards.
• ✔️ Talk with your family about what you’ll do if a bush fire threatens.

Don’t wait until the first hot, windy day. Prepare now so you’re ready when it matters most.

❓Are you aware of your responsibilities when undertaking a pile burn on your property?

🚨Over the past few days brigades within the Far South Coast District have attended a number of escaped pile burns. A fire is not out once you cannot see flame.
Residual heat will remain for a number of days or weeks in the ember bed, which can escape when you are least expecting it.
