(Maine) Charter: 20010268ND] is an international nonprofit organisation, established in March 1998, as a living history society promoting Roman themed education and networking. We are an organised social group of like-minded individuals and a collection of people who share a common interest in all aspects of ancient Rome. Students, academics and enthusiasts have come together to form a symbolic na

tion based on the ancient Roman Republic providing an immersive tangible experience to live as a Roman. We are always looking for interested people, organsiations and groups willing to help build upon the foundations of our local community. Whatever your specific Roman interest or skill, there will be something you can help with or enjoy! Nova Roma Australia & New Zealand (currently called Australia Nova Romana) is the regional branch and a subsidiary to Nova Roma Inc. All our local ANR members (citizens) are Australians and New Zealanders who have taken an interest to explore ancient Rome and have become citizens of Nova Roma in our symbolic Roman Republic. There are activities and interests for everyone and members can choose their own path and how they participate. We seek to explore the detail of many facets of Roman life, such as food, clothing, history, language, society and military enterprise as well as Roman politics. We are a living history society, striving for accuracy in all things Roman (with the necessary compromises for modern life) and we educate our selves not through role-play but by seeking to walk the path as the modern day decedents of ancient Rome. We welcome you will join us as a citizen and share in the Mos Maiorum (the customs of our ancestors) and Romanitas (the Roman Way). Visit our website or send us an email to find out more.

The Nova Roman governor of Provincia Australia, Decimus Aurelius Ingeniarius, had the privilege of presiding over his first public event and games at the Queanbeyan Medieval Fair a.d. V Kal. Oct. - a.d. IV Kal. Oct. P. Aurelio C. Flavio cos. (27-28 September).

Honouring the Ludi Romani taking place in Nova Roma, the governor presented the new vexillum for Cohors I Praetoria Australis, an Autonomous (Military) Reenactment Unit of Nova Roma (fully Nova Roman unit). Run by ‘Nova Roma Praetorium Australe’, a group based out of Adelaide, South Australia, they depict the highly recognisable yet more theatrical depiction of the 'praetoriani', the presidential or praetorian guard. The group is led by Nova Roman Q. Fulvius Paullus, Praetorianus Armatus, Tribunus Cohortis.

The governor, witnessed a small parade and demonstration of abilities by several other Roman reenactment groups in attendance, including the Nova Roman Allied legions of the Legio IX Hispana Sydney and Legio II Augusta (National Military Reenactment Group NMRG, Canberra). It also included a contingent from Legio VI Victrix - Sydney. The presentation finished with a gladiatorial display, in which the governor presented the winner with a symbolic award of a 'rudis'. Accolades are owed to Nova Roman Ti. Valerius Martialis, Praefectus Legionis and Centurio Legio II Augusta, for his organisation, leadership, and accommodation of Nova Roma at this event.

Finding Jobs and Opportunities in Nova Roma

Based on a recent edict passed, a new department as been created under the the Office of Public Works (Officium Operum Publicorum). This new department is led by senator A. Iulius Paterculus.

To help all citizens find opportunities to volunteer and work in our global society, a page on our website has been rebuilt displaying all known opportunities.

http://www.novaroma.org/nr/Officium_Implicationis_et_Opportunitatis_(Nova_Roma)

As this page becomes more widely known, other magistrates, officials and governors can advertise the positions and jobs they wished to be filled. Should you wish to have a job added or updated, please contact A. Iulius Paterculus or Decimus Aurelius Ingeniarius. This page doesn't preclude magistrates from hand-picking staff or advertising by other means but it does provide a consistent and known location that all citizens can turn to to see how they might be able to contribute in Nova Roma.

An excellent way to absorb the Romanitas and education about ancient Rome that Nova Roma provides is to volunteer in our society! The best way to learn is by "doing". Nova Roma does not just "happen to you" - you need to actively participate and interact with fellow citizens. The various voluntary e...

LUDI MEGALENSES NOVAE ROMAE | Dedication of a new Vicus

To mark the celebrations of the Ludi Megalenses and in honor and dedication to Magna Mater, local citizens in Provincia Australia came together to found the first formal vicus forum in the province.

In attendance was the governor, who marked the start of the meeting and celebratory feast, of the soon to be vicani, with an opening speech. They met in a local Italian café, and feasted in celebration as they discussed Magna Mater and the history of the Ludi Megalenses.

Below is a brief extract of the presentation:

The Ludi Megalenses were public games held in ancient Rome from April 4th to April 10th in honor of the goddess Magna Mater (the "Great Mother"), also known as Cybele, whose cult was brought to Rome from Phrygia in 204 BCE during the Second Punic War. The festival celebrated the goddess’s arrival and her divine protection of the Roman state. The ludi included theatrical performances, chariot races, and public feasting, reflecting both religious devotion and civic entertainment. The cult of Magna Mater was known for its ecstatic rituals and was one of the first major foreign religions formally integrated into Roman religious life.

The governor then formally read the founding edict for the vicus. The edict, as read, is below:

Edictum Proprætorium de Conditione Vici Kanberrae

Edict for the Creation of Vicus Kanberrae

Preamble
This edict is hereby read at a live celebration event of local Nova Roma citizens, allies and guests, by the current appointed governor of provincia Australia.

I. In my capacity as Propraetor Australiae, bestowed upon me by the Senate under senatus consultum ultimum de rectoribus provinciarum, prorogued for the current term under the Senatus consultum de prorogatione et de relatione praesidum provinciarum, with the authority granted to me under the lex Cornelia Domitia de re publica constituenda, I may proclaim those edicts necessary to engage in those tasks which advance the mission and function of Nova Roma.

II. In accordance with the Lex Fabia de oppidis et municipiis, I approve the presented constitutio (charter), version 2.1 of the Constitutio Vici Kanberrae, as certified by the Praetorian Law Revision Committee of Classicists and Latinists. This Constitutio is received from the citizens of Nova Roma in the metropolitan and greater region of the City of Canberra, in the Australian Capital Territory, to establish the recognised forum of 'Vicus Kanberra'.

III. We dedicate this founding of this vicus in the name the goddess Magna Mater, whom we celebrate today and during the time April 4 to April 10. With the opening of the Ludi Megalenses, in Rome by aedilis curulis L. Calpurnius Bestia, our founding of the vicus is another celebration, coinciding with the Nova Roman festival program in Diocletianopolis, a program organised by Provincia Thracia. May Magna Mater watch over Vicus Kanberra and Provincia Australia.

IV. As a fellow member of the vicus, I shall manage the election of the first inaugural magistrates under appointment as the praefectus iure dicundo. It is with adequate quorum and recognised candidates that the first election shall be conducted live after the reading of this edictum.

V. This becomes a momentous occasion in the history of our province. This vicus becomes the first of its kind in the region and now sets the benchmark for future local groups around the province, across Australia and New Zealand. I encourage all citizens from all over the region to celebrate Romanitas with their fellow Roman community wherever they reside. May the gods watch over this new vicus with great favour.

VI. This edict is effective immediately. Given under my hand this 06 April 2778 ab Urbis condita.

Datum a.d. VIII Id. Apr. ‡ P. Aurelio C. Flavio cos. ‡ MMDCCLXXVIII a.u.c.

D. Aurelius Ingeniarius
Praetor Australiae

***

Proceeding the edictum reading, the election of the first magistri vici of the new vicus forum was conducted for Vicus Kanberra.

Report of the results of the election as follows:

Elected in first place with 6 votes, Marca Tuccia Merga – Is elected Magister Vici.

Elected in second place, with 5 votes, Aulus Claudius Venator – Is elected Magister Vici.

The governor passed on his heartfelt congratulations to the new magistri vici. He stated his thanks to them and all local citizens who came together to make this happen. The rest of the province now looks to Vicus Kanberra as the bench mark for forming municipalities.

Pompeii, preserved ancient Roman city in Campania, Italy, 23 km southeast of Naples, at the southeastern base of Mount Vesuvius. Around noon on August 24, 79 CE, a huge eruption from Mount Vesuvius showered volcanic debris over the city of Pompeii, followed the next day by clouds of blisteringly hot gases. Buildings were destroyed, the population was crushed or asphyxiated, and the city was buried beneath a blanket of ash and pumice. For many centuries Pompeii slept beneath its pall of ash, which perfectly preserved the remains. When these were finally unearthed, in the 1700s, the world was astonished at the discovery of a sophisticated Greco-Roman city frozen in time.
