Bukjeh: Real & Intimate Stories of Forced Displacement

Bukjeh is an exhibition and a series of short performances led by Palestinian artist Aseel Tayah, where refugees and audiences of all backgrounds can engage meaningfully and share a personal dialogue. Installed in a disaster relief tent in the Immigration Museum courtyard, the installation will revolve around the theme of the “bukjeh”, a sack or swag, in which refugees collect their small number of belongings for their journey

Every story we tell keeps a truth alive.

Bukjeh was born from the belief that stories can heal , that through art, we can carry the weight of loss, the warmth of home, and the wisdom of our ancestors.

Today, our storytellers, mothers, children, and artists continue to create spaces of belonging , from Palestine to Australia where memory resists erasure and hope takes root again.

I’m emotional, excited, and absolutely over the moon to share that we are building a Bukjeh team in our beloved homeland! 🍉

Next week, we’ll be holding a series of spontaneous events across the country ❤️🙏🏽

We’re working on powerful plans for theatre, film, visual and traditional arts, rooted in First Peoples’ stories, climate, sustainability, and community healing. Our focus is on supporting elders, youth, and children on a land that has carried deep suffering for as long as I can remember.

I’m collaborating with family, childhood friends, and new allies to ensure our stories continue and survive.

This is only the beginning, and it will take time. If you’d like to join us and support the Bukjeh team, please reach out. Every hour, every hand, every heart helps us grow.

The last two days were something else…

The kind of connection you can’t really describe , only feel.
Palestinians, First Nations, Muslims, friends, strangers who felt like family…

We sat, we shared, we listened, we laughed, we cried.
We made space for each other. And that space held us.

Grateful for everyone who showed up with their full heart.
Grateful for this collaboration with the Centre for Muslim Wellbeing.
Grateful for the stories that reminded us who we are.

And… we’re not done yet.
We still have Tuesday and Wednesday, 10am–1pm at Next Wave and 7-8 Hakime - Recital centre Concert!

I woke up this morning to a message that made me cry, actually not just a message, it was a gift.
For a long time, I have not cried because I was sad, but because someone believed in our work enough to invest in it, not just money but a lot of support.

Yesterday, I shared our Australian Cultural Fund campaign for Bukjeh’s National Tour, sent it out to dear people I know will stand behind me, this campaign was a dream we’ve been building for years, bringing stories of home, loss, resilience and joy to cities across Australia. A tour that connects displaced communities, First Nations, artists, mothers, and children through art, music, and story.

Over night, we received our first major donation from the incredible Ali Ozeer on behalf of the Foundation

It was generous. Quiet. Immediate. And it carried more than just funding, it carried belief, that I am sooooooo grateful for, When someone backs your work before the world fully sees it , you don’t forget it.

Thank you, Ali, for seeing Bukjeh. For recognising the power of storytelling to build empathy, change systems, and bring healing.

We now invite others to stand with us, individuals, foundations, organisations who believe that art belongs to everyone and that the communities most impacted by conflict and displacement deserve to be heard and celebrated.

Have you ever had to pack your whole life into one bag… and call it “home”?
Bukjeh, which means the sack of belongings is bringing Hakaya of Home to Perth, a special gathering of stories, food, and community.
 A moment to pause. To listen. To feel what it means to carry your home on your back, in your memories, in your heart.
Hakay is a weaving of lived experiences by people who’ve had to leave everything behind and start again. Refugees. Migrants. Survivors. Artists. Mothers.
 We’re holding this for them, and for all of us who need to remember how deeply human we all are. And whatever we make on the day, will be sent to those suffering on the ground needing our support ❤️
