Melbourne Day is the anniversary of the first permanent European settlement: the founding of Melbourne on 30 August 1835. As Melbourne reopens after COVID disruptions, we call on the city and Melburnians to celebrate like never before all that makes our city great and to affirm the values that make us the envy of the world: tolerance, inclusivity, creativity, resilience and respect. Melbourne Day
is also a time to celebrate and support our city's indigenous culture and heritage, and to remember the impact of European arrival on the people of the Kulin nation: the Wurundjeri (Woiwurrung), Boon Wurrung, Taungurong, Djajawurrung and the Wathaurung - who lived here for tens of thousands of years. On behalf of the people of Victoria, Melbourne Day Committee works with stakeholders - including council, businesses, authorities, community groups and tourism industry partners - to raise awareness of Melbourne's story, help correct the record about the founding of Melbourne and celebrate its anniversaries. All Melburnians are urged to celebrate our city's birthday. Hold your own event or join an official one – no matter where in the world, celebrate on 30 August.
