πŸ“Έ Friday Flashback πŸ“Έ

With all the carry-on about Tuesday's high tide, we thought we'd flash it back to the 2009 King Tide when the caravan park really did go under water!

Back then, the water was knee-deep in places, caravans were surrounded, and getting around required a good sense of humour (and a boat) As you can see, despite the floodwaters, there were still plenty of smiles to be found.

Thankfully, Tuesday's tide was nowhere near this level β€” but it's always a good reminder of just how much water the gulf can throw our way.

Do you remember the 2009 King Tide? We'd love to hear your stories (and see your photos!) in the comments. 🌊😊

FR I D A Y F L A S H B A C K

This week we are sharing a fascinating piece of local history recently gifted to the 5570 Collective.

The diary was written by Private E.J. Cairns, who lived in Price before enlisting in the First World War. The diary begins on 31 May 1915, recording his departure from Mitcham Camp and his voyage aboard the troop ship Geelong bound for Gallipoli.

His entries provide a remarkable firsthand account of life at sea, describing rough weather, seasickness among his fellow soldiers, and the anticipation of what lay ahead. Reading his words more than 110 years later offers a powerful glimpse into the experiences of a young local man heading off to war.

Private Cairns later landed at Gallipoli and, tragically, was killed in October 1915 while attempting to assist wounded comrades.

We feel privileged to have been gifted a copy of this diary and look forward to sharing more excerpts in future Friday Flashback posts.

Lest we forget. πŸ‡¦πŸ‡Ί
