CICM First Part Examination Candidate Update Session: 5.30pm AEST Wednesday 24 June 2026

Please join Dr Naomi Pallas, CICM First Part Exam Committee Chair, for an information session on the upcoming First Part Examinations in August and October 2026.

There will be an opportunity for Q&A. You may also submit questions in advance via [email protected] to have them addressed anonymously. The session will be recorded for those unable to attend.

The College is proud to congratulate CICM Past President Prof Bala Venkatesh and Associate Prof David Austin on recently being appointed Members of the Order of Australia (AM) in the General Division in the King's Birthday Honours.

Bala is widely recognised as one of the leading figures in intensive care medicine, both in Australia, and internationally. Across a distinguished career in clinical care, research, education and leadership, he has made a profound contribution to improving outcomes for critically ill patients and advancing the specialty worldwide.

Bala’s career has been defined by excellence, generosity and service. He continues to inspire colleagues and trainees across the intensive care community. For over nearly three decades, David has held leadership roles in intensive care units across Australia and New Zealand, including 28 years as an Intensive Care Unit Director and 19 years serving in Queensland. His contributions have extended beyond clinical practice to governance, having served as Deputy Chair of a Hospital and Health Board, as well as playing a significant role in specialist training and assessment.

Beyond medicine, Associate Professor Austin has combined his commitment to healthcare with a lifelong passion for sport. He has served as Medical Director for Yachting New Zealand for 12 years and as a member of the Australian Sailing National Safety Committee for eight years. The Australian & New Zealand Intensive Care Foundation are very excited to announce their very first National Campaign, the StepUp4ICU Challenge! 👣

StepUp4ICU is a bi-national movement of steps, stories and support for the future of intensive care research and education. In October, we'll be asking you to walk or run 200,000 steps to honour the 200,000 patients requiring intensive care every year. All funds raised will go towards lifesaving research and education.

In May, the ICF piloted the StepUp4ICU challenge across 6 ICU sites (Hobart, Wangaratta, Sydney, Perth, Christchurch, and Auckland), including 2 offices; CICM and Mindray. It was a great success!

Every single step helped raise awareness for the more than 200,000 people admitted to intensive care units across Australia and New Zealand every year. Behind every ICU admission is a person, a family and a healthcare team navigating some of life’s most critical moments.

To everyone who donated, fundraised, walked, supported teammates or spread awareness, thank you!
