There's a lot of learning happening behind every little masterpiece 🎨

Making art is problem-solving, experimentation, reflection and story-telling. It allows students to explore different ways of seeing themselves and understanding the world around them. đź’™

What does BOABS stand for?

✨ Be friendly
✨ Organised
✨ Always strong and responsible
✨ Be respectful
✨ Stay safe

Students at Bulla Camp School in the Northern Territory worked with Song Room Teaching Artist James Winwood to write their very own song, inspired by the mighty boab tree and the values that bring their community together.

Now their voices and creativity are being shared across the Territory on VAMPtv! 🎶

"Boabs are the trees we see, and the values of our community." đź’š

Thanks VAMPtv for celebrating these students with us!

Thank you to The Smith Family Katherine for making this possible, a Facilitating Partner for Communities for Children funded by the Australian Government's Department of Social Services.

"I am proud of making a song and not giving up" said a student after their Primary Production program.

Music gives young people a chance to try something new, building confidence, perseverance and pride when they create something completely their own. 🎶💪✨

Today is International Day of the Girl đź’›

Around the world, 133 million girls are out of school.

Today is a reminder of why access to education and opportunity matters so much.

We're lucky to be working alongside our partners MECCA M-POWER to give more young people opportunties to create and reach their potential through arts learning.🎨🎵

"I feel calm, relaxed and just focused on the song", says Imaya, a student participating in The Bridge program that brings real world music industry professionals into the classroom.

Listening to Imaya describe how music makes her feel tells us how it can help develop critical social and emotional learning skills, like self-regulation.

Music in the classroom can be loud, fun and full of energy, but it can also be incredibly calming and create moments of focus. đź’›

Here’s a snippet of “Seasons” 🎵, an original song written by students at Ardeer South Primary School as part of their Primary Production program.

And the creativity doesn’t stop with the music! 🎨
We LOVE seeing the incredible album artwork students create to bring their tracks to life.

Creative confidence starts young. 🎨✨

New research commissioned by MECCA found that two-thirds of Australian women felt creative most or all of the time as children. In adulthood, that falls to just one-third.

Through our partnership with MECCA M-POWER, we’re helping more young people build the confidence to find their creative voice, and hold onto it. 💛🎵

We're presenting at the Yarra & Darebin Principal's Conference today!

Our wonderful team, Arts Learning Director, Amelia Christou, and Educational Partnerships Manager, Milly Petriella, are presenting on the impact of The Song Room's programs in strengthening conditions for students to thrive in all areas of their learning.

Our program outcomes show that arts learning is a critical tool for building connection, student wellbeing and engagement. When these foundations are strong, students are able to achieve success in other areas such as literacy, numeracy, SEL and criticial and creative thinking.

If you're exploring new ways to create opportunities for your students to learn, create and thrive, get in touch with us here: https://www.songroom.org.au/contact-us/

We'd love to discuss ways our tailored arts programs can support your school's priorities and goals.

FREE First Nations Professional Learning Webinar for teachers & school leaders!

Learning Together: Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures through the Arts (October 15th)

Many educators recognise the importance of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures Cross-Curriculum Priority but are looking for practical, respectful ways to engage with it in the classroom.

Join Associate Professor, Emily Wilson (University of Melbourne) and First Nations Arts Educator and The Song Room Teaching Artist, Aunty Sammy Trist, for a practical session exploring how arts learning can support meaningful engagement with First Nations perspectives, place, community and culture.

You’ll come away with practical approaches, classroom-ready starting points and useful resources to support your teaching, alongside reflections from The Song Room’s Deadly Arts program.
