Happy International Nurses Day 💙

Each year on the 12th of May, the birthdate of nursing pioneer Florence Nightingale, we celebrate International Nurses Day (IND) to honour and recognise the critical role nurses play in providing health care around the world. This day marks the contributions that nurses make to society, often under challenging circumstances, and highlights the need for continued support and appreciation for the nursing profession. This year, the theme for IND is Our Nurses. Our Future. Empowered Nurses Save Lives.

Across Australia and New Zealand, more than 500,000 nurses provide care, advocacy and support to patients and families every single day, including over 14,000 intensive care nurses delivering expert care in some of the most critical moments of a patient’s life.

Today the Foundation celebrates the compassion, resilience and dedication of nurses everywhere. Thank you for all that you do.

May is National Critical Care Awareness and Recognition Month 💙
We recognise the incredible teams caring for the sickest patients across Australia and New Zealand.

Every year, more than 200,000 patients are admitted to ICU.
Over 90% of adults & 97% of children survive life threatening accidents or illnesses thanks to the skill, compassion and dedication of critical care teams.

This May, wear blue for ICU and show support for the healthcare workers, patients, and families at the heart of critical care.

To all the clinicians and allied health workers, researchers, educators, and advocates working in critical care, thank you for the lifesaving work you do every day.

Today is the last day to Express Interest in the Intensive Care Foundation's Research and Education Grants

We’re proud to highlight one of our 2025 Research Grant recipients, Mohamed Kamal.

Ketones are a natural energy source produced by the liver, particularly when glucose levels are low. While their benefits have been explored in other areas, their role in critically ill patients remains largely unknown.

Mohamed’s project will investigate whether increasing blood ketone levels through a liquid ketone solution can support recovery in some of the sickest patients in ICU.

Thank you to our supporting partners — Mindray, bellavista, Vantive, Fisher & Paykel, and Hamilton Medical and to our founding partners — the College of Intensive Care Medicine (CICM), ANZICS, and ACCCN. Your commitment enables meaningful investment in research and education.

Today is the last day to Express Interest in the Intensive Care Foundation's Research and Education Grants

We’re proud to highlight one of our 2025 Research Grant recipients, Dilip Jayasimhan.

Dilip’s project aims to deliver a multicentre inception cohort study across intensive care units in New Zealand, examining spontaneous breathing activity and adherence to low tidal volume ventilation in patients with Acute Hypoxemic Respiratory Failure receiving invasive ventilation. This important work will enable critical insights and inform the design of a future randomised controlled trial.

Research like this reflects the impact of clinician-led innovation in advancing intensive care.
