A new peer-reviewed study in Frontiers in Veterinary Science found that 2 out of 3 dogs with lymphoma were exposed to benzene at DNA-damaging levels, and nearly 9 out of 10 were exposed to xylene. But here’s what most people miss: over half of healthy dogs had similar benzene exposure, and nearly all dogs had xylene exposure too.

This isn’t rare, it’s everyday life. These chemicals, released from products like cleaners, air fresheners, candles, paints, furniture, and even gas stoves, are commonly found in indoor air and can damage DNA in lab studies. Most dogs are living in a constant background of exposure we rarely think about.

The good news is you can reduce it.🙌 Focus on your indoor air, improve ventilation, use an air purifier with activated carbon if possible, avoid synthetic fragrances, switch to simpler low-toxin products, and eliminate smoke exposure. It’s not one big toxin that matters, it’s the constant low-level exposure over time.

And while reducing exposure is step one, supporting your dog’s ability to handle what they’re still exposed to matters just as much.

Providing opportunities for your dog to explore, giving them a safe and comfortable space to retreat to — as well as a good routine — are key to keeping your dog happy.

These chemicals don’t just target pests, they impact a wide range of wildlife, from bees and butterflies to fish, birds, and bats, disrupting pollination, food chains, and overall ecosystem balance.

Flea and tick preventatives often involve similar pesticide exposure. While sometimes necessary, what happens after exposure matters. Supporting the body’s natural detox pathways with proper nutrition, antioxidants, and gentle detox strategies can help reduce the burden on the liver, kidneys, nervous system, and immune system. It’s not just about protection, but also about helping the body recover from what it’s exposed to.

Scientists have uncovered a potential explanation for why some dogs experience seizures and other neurological issues after taking common flea and tick medications like Bravecto, NexGard, Credelio, Simparica, and Revolution. Real-world reports show that certain dogs, especially puppies, older dogs, or those with genetic vulnerabilities, can develop tremors, seizures, or other nervous system problems. The study suggests that these drugs may reach the brain through a “back door” pathway called centripetal (retrograde) axonal transport, bypassing the usual protective blood brain barrier. Additionally, certain chemical additives in the medications, such as PFAS compounds, may increase this risk by helping the drugs enter nerve cells or acting as neurotoxic agents themselves. Overall, this research highlights a previously underappreciated nerve pathway that could explain why some dogs are more susceptible to neurological side effects from flea and tick treatments.

Preventing unwanted litters is a goal we all share, but it may be time to rethink the surgical approach. Hormone-sparing procedures such as hysterectomy and vasectomy can make dogs sterile while preserving natural hormone balance, and they can often be performed as early as 8 weeks of age.

A large peer reviewed analysis has raised important questions. In this hospital population, spayed female dogs showed roughly 30 to 80 percent higher odds of several cancers compared with intact females. However, age remained the strongest driver of cancer risk overall.

Researchers reviewed medical records from 150,063 dogs and cats seen at the University of California, Davis Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital between 2000 and 2019. They evaluated which cancers were most common and how risk related to age, breed, s*x, and neuter status.

Spayed female dogs showed higher odds of several cancers compared with intact females:

• Lymphoid cancer (immune system cancers such as lymphoma): about 80 percent higher odds
• Mast cell tumor (a common skin cancer from allergy cells): about 60 percent higher odds
• Melanoma (cancer of pigment cells, often in the mouth or toes): about 40 percent higher odds

*Preventing unwanted litters is a goal we all share—but it's time to rethink the surgical approach. Hysterectomies and vasectomies, which preserve hormonal balance, can safely be performed as early as 8 weeks of age, making dogs sterile without disrupting their natural hormones.

New peer-reviewed study published in Nature:

How a dog’s lifetime exposure to his own hormones (before being neutered) affects how well he handles aging and frailty later in life.

Study Background

• Frailty = when older dogs (and people) become weaker, less resilient, and more prone to illness and death.
• Most research looks at how to prevent frailty — this study looked at what makes some dogs bounce back better after frailty sets in.
• The focus was on the HPG axis — the hormonal system that produces testosterone and controls reproduction.

Key Findings

• Dogs neutered very young (before 2 years old) had:

o A much higher risk of death once they became frail.
o About 16% higher mortality for every small increase in frailty.

• Dogs kept intact longer (more than ~10 years) showed:
o No increase in mortality linked to frailty.
o Their hormones seemed to “buffer” the negative effects of aging.

• Each extra year of natural hormone exposure reduced frailty-related death risk by ~1%.

What It Means

• Hormones from the te**es may protect against the worst effects of aging later in life.
• Removing them too early could make dogs less resilient to age-related decline.
• Frailty isn’t just about getting old — it’s also shaped by early-life events like the timing of neutering.
• This supports a “life course” view: what happens early in life affects health decades later.

Why It Matters

• The study suggests timing of neutering might influence how well dogs age.

New independent research supporting what we have observed in our practice over the last 22 years.

Dogs fed a low carbohydrate minimally processed diet have a different metabolism and biomarkers associated with health, like lower fasting glucose and cholesterol (in addition to the other evidence based effects in the screenshot attached)
