It is that time of year again, when the Southern Ocean turns into a living passageway, and these gentle giants return to our coast.

There is something grounding about watching them. A quiet reminder that this stretch of Australia has always been part of a much larger story.

From the clifftops and lookouts, you might catch the arc of a tail, the shimmer of a back, or the sudden exhale of mist. Sometimes it is a distant shape. Sometimes it is right there, putting on an unmistakable show.

Portland is one of the best places in Victoria to see whales from the shore (or at sea), and you do not need much more than time, patience and a good vantage point. Bring a warm coat. Stay a while. Let the coastline do what it has always done.

Because this season is not just about spotting whales. It is about slowing down long enough to notice them.

And out here, that feels like more

It's that time of year again....

Autumn mornings in Portland have been nothing short of spectacular. Soft light drifts across the coastline, colouring the sky in gentle, warming hues as the day slowly arrives.

We are grateful to those who rise early and share these quiet moments with locals and visitors alike. Thank you to Anne McCurdy for capturing this beautiful sunrise over Nuns Beach.

Just a short stroll from the centre of town, Nuns Beach offers calm, sheltered waters perfect for families, peaceful swims and those drawn to the stillness of first light.

If you are visiting Portland, make time for sunrise. It is something truly special.

At sunrise, Portland holds a different kind of quiet.

The sky comes to life slowly over the harbour, deep orange stretching across the water. And in the distance, the corkscrew stands tall. A silhouette that has stood here, in one form or another, for generations.

First built in 1960 as an observatory on the breakwater, it was a gift from those who built the port.

A place to climb, to look out, to feel the scale of the sea and look back toward town.

Time and tide did what they always do.
Wind. Salt. Years in open sea air.

The original structure wasn’t meant to last forever. But its place as an icon in Portland did.

What stands there now is a replica. Set within a working port that supports local industry and employment across regional Victoria. You can still see it, still recognise it, even at a distance.

And every now and then, the gates open again.

Keep an eye on Port of Portland socials for updates on the days when Corkscrew tours are on offer. It’s a rare chance to step back out and stand within one of Portland’s most enduring landmarks.

Did we get the details right, or miss something along the way? Let us know in the comments.

There are some incredible local photographers in and around Portland, far too many to mention, but Allen McCauley is truly one of the greats. Often greeting the day at sunrise or gazing deep into the night, Allen has an extraordinary ability to capture this place at its most powerful and its most quiet.

From glowing sunrises and dramatic night skies to whales, wildlife, and ever-changing coastal scenes, his photography tells the story of Portland with patience, skill, and deep respect for the landscape.

Thank you, Allen, for generously sharing your vision with our community and with all those who come to experience Portland.

There are some incredible surf spots along the Portland coastline, and lately the conditions have delivered a series of truly epic days.

This coast is something else entirely, whether you’re out in the water catching waves, fishing from the shore, or watching for whales as they migrate past during the cooler months.

Wild, powerful, and ever-changing, Portland’s coastline invites you to experience the Southern Ocean at its purest.

The colours of autumn are something else, especially when wandering through Fawthrop Lagoon. It’s a wonderful place for a solo stroll or time with the family, with ducks and swans frequently seen across the water.

Just a short walk from Portland’s CBD, Fawthrop Lagoon links through to the beautiful Botanic Gardens, making it easy to turn a simple walk into a longer, leisurely wander.

In every season, Portland offers space to slow down and enjoy the simple beauty of the outdoors.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them

The night skies in Portland are something else entirely. Find a quiet spot along the coast or out in the country, where darkness fully takes over, and the sky opens up, revealing a breath-taking display of stars overhead.

For those seeking stillness, space, and unforgettable nights beneath the southern sky, Portland offers a rare and memorable experience.

A crisp autumn morning stroll or jog around Fawthrop Lagoon in Portland is one of the best ways to start the day. A haven for birdlife, calm reflections on the water, and if you’re lucky, a koala or two tucked into the trees.

Fawthrop Lagoon is also the place to be for the weekly Parkrun, bringing the community together each weekend. Check their page for times and details.
