She visited the PMQ Maritime Museum to pay her respects to her late Great Grandfather, Capt Owen Sargent. Capt Owen served aboard the Wollongbar II, the ship torpedoed by Japanese forces near Crescent Head during WWII.

We have a room dedicated to the Wollongbar II at Lady Mermaid Cottage, part of the Pilot Cottages at 6 William St, PMQ. You're welcome to visit and explore our three unique cottages:

(1) Lady Nelson Cottage – Our main cottage, featuring six rooms of immersive maritime history.

(2) Mermaid Cottage – Home to the Wollongbar II exhibit, telling the powerful story of the ship torpedoed off Crescent Head.

(3) Prince Regent (The Art Gallery) – Showcasing artworks in support of our local artists.

She came to Port Macquarie to trace her ancestors who arrived via often referred to in local history as the “First Fleet of Port Macquarie” in 1821 — and to attend the NSW & ACT Family History Conference 2026 at Panthers Port Macquarie, running today through 20 September 2026. She managed to trace 8 generations on both sides of her family, and credits her mum for getting her hooked on family history.

The NSW & ACT Family History Conference 2026 is on in Panthers Port Macquarie, Port Macquarie NSW tomorrow until 20 September 2026.

We’ve already had a few participants visit the Maritime Museum while tracing their ancestors — including some whose families arrived on the First Fleet in 1821. 💕💕
