🏠 Thinking about applying for social housing? 🏠

Often, we get asked how to apply for housing, or if we have any houses available. Below is some information to help you with the process.

You can apply for social housing through Housing Pathways, which is the main system for social housing in NSW.

Many Rivers works closely with the Aboriginal Housing Office (AHO) and Housing Pathways to support our community through the process.

✨ What you need to know:

Applications for social housing are made through Housing Pathways (not through Many Rivers).

You can apply online https://onlineforms.homes.nsw.gov.au/register/AHA/
or by phone 1800 422 322

Your application helps determine eligibility for public, community, and Aboriginal housing

Priority is given based on need and circumstances

💬 If you’re not sure where to start, or need help with an application, documents, or understanding your options — you can reach out to us here at Many Rivers. We’re here to walk alongside you and make sure you get the right support.

📞 Call us or drop into the office for a yarn. ❤️🖤💛

🏠 Understanding Family Succession After a Tenant Passes Away 🏠
We know that the passing of a family member is a very difficult time. We also understand that the family home is often linked to the grieving process and we want to help community to understand what happens to a property when a tenant passes away.
Under Aboriginal Housing Office (AHO) policy, housing is not automatically transferred to family members after a tenant’s death. This process is called family succession, and it must be formally assessed.
What this means:
• Usually, only people who were approved household members and living in the home as their main residence at the time of the tenant’s passing may be considered.
• Family succession is not guaranteed. Each request is assessed against AHO eligibility rules and housing need.
• The person applying must meet AHO housing eligibility requirements, including income and residency rules.
• If approved, the new tenant will be required to sign a new tenancy agreement.
• If succession is not approved, the property must be returned to the housing provider so it can be offered to another family in need.
Important reminders:
❤️🖤💛 Always make sure everyone living in the home is listed and approved on the tenancy agreement.
❤️🖤💛 Please let us know as soon as possible if there are any changes to who is living in the property.
If your family has been affected by a death and you are unsure what to do next, please contact us. We are here to explain the process and support you through this time.

🏠Housing is Self-Determination 🏡

Many Rivers Aboriginal Housing welcomes the Government’s commitment through the Housing Australia Future Fund (HAFF) Round 3, which will see $600 million invested in Aboriginal housing by June 2029.

Housing is more than infrastructure.
For Aboriginal communities, it is the foundation of identity, safety and self-determination.

When families have a stable, culturally safe home, they can engage in education, employment, culture, healing and community life. When they don’t, every other measure of wellbeing becomes harder to achieve.

That’s why our focus this year is clear:
Housing must be recognised as an essential building block for Closing the Gap.

Many Rivers will be pursuing opportunities to create more homes for Aboriginal people through HAFF, and we strongly encourage other Aboriginal organisations to do the same.

Let’s keep pushing for housing solutions that empower self-determination — not just for today, but for generations to come.

✨ Thank You to Our Owner Groups & Tenants ✨
As we come to the end of another year, we want to pause and express our heartfelt appreciation to all our Owner Groups, Tenants, Elders, families, and community members who walk with us.
Thank you for your trust, your guidance, and the strength you bring to our organisation. Your voices, stories, and connection to Country shape everything we do.
To our tenants — thank you for your cooperation, patience, and community spirit throughout the year.
To our Owner Groups — thank you for your leadership, cultural knowledge, and ongoing support for the work we do together.
We are proud of what we’ve achieved as a community, and we look forward to continuing this journey with you in the new year.
Wishing everyone a safe and restful Christmas. May the holidays bring you peace, joy, and time with mob and loved ones.

Many Rivers offices in Port Macquarie and Lismore will be closed from Friday 19 December, and will re-open Monday 5 January.

During the office closure period, tenants can still call for critical repairs by calling 02 6562 2576 (24/7)

🔥 Bushfire Safety Message for Our Community 🔥

As the weather heats up, we’re asking all our tenants to help keep our homes, families, and country safe.

🌿 Keep Your Yard Safe

Please clear leaves, dry grass, and rubbish from around your home.

Trim back bushes and overhanging branches.

Keep gutters free from leaf build-up.
A clean yard can slow a fire and give emergency crews a better chance to protect your home.

🛖 Looking After Home & Country
Caring for our space helps protect everyone around us. If you need support with heavy clean-ups or don’t have the tools you need, get in touch with us—we’re here to help.

🔥 Be Prepared

Have a simple bushfire plan: know where you’ll go and how you’ll get there.

Keep important items (medications, documents, phones) in an easy-to-grab spot.

Make sure every family member knows what to do if a fire starts.

🚨 If a Fire Approaches

Follow all instructions from emergency services.

Leave early if you feel unsafe—your life and your family come first.

Stay informed on local alerts and warnings.

Thank you to everyone doing their part to keep our community strong and safe.
Stay alert, stay ready, and look after one another!
