NACCHO proudly congratulates Pat Turner AO, a proud Arrernte and Gurdanji woman, on being appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia for distinguished service to the Indigenous community.

This honour recognises a lifetime of service to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, through national policy reform, community-controlled health, Closing the Gap, governance, leadership and the pursuit of justice for our people.

For more than five decades, Pat has helped shape the national agenda. She has challenged governments, strengthened institutions, backed communities and insisted that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people must lead the decisions that affect our lives, our health and our futures.

During her decade as NACCHO CEO, Pat strengthened the national voice of Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations and helped position ACCHOs where they belong: at the centre of health reform, trusted by community and led by community.

In Pat’s own words:
“The quiet day-to-day work done in our communities shows the broader Australian community what happens when Aboriginal health is in Aboriginal hands.”

That belief has carried her work and strengthened ours.

Pat’s AO is a powerful recognition of her leadership and of the community-controlled sector she has spent her life championing. Her legacy lives in stronger ACCHOs, stronger national advocacy, stronger partnerships and a clearer path for future Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leaders to walk in strength.

Thank you, Pat, for your extraordinary service, your courage, your clarity and your lifelong commitment to our people.
