When we see someone sleeping on a bench, we tend to see the bench. Not the person.

But look closer.
A woman curled under a thin blanket.
A man clutching a cardboard sign that simply says HELP.
A life reduced to what can be carried in two hands.
A public park becoming a bedroom because there’s nowhere else to go.

We walk past scenes like this every day. Not always because we don’t care, but because it’s easier to believe this could never be us.

Except the truth is far less comfortable.

Homelessness isn’t a distant problem. It’s a fragile line between that thousands cross every year, often without warning.

Here’s the reality we don’t like to sit with:

✅ 122,000+ Australians are homeless, but frontline workers will tell you the real number is much higher.
✅ 3 million people are living one crisis away from losing their home.
✅ That’s a 63% jump in 6 years.
✅ Last year, services supported 280,000 people, and had to turn away 110,000 more because there simply wasn’t capacity.

And the face of homelessness is changing.

💚 Women over 55 are now the fastest growing group experiencing homelessness.
💚 More than 400,000 women aged 45+ are currently at risk.

Imagine working your whole life, raising kids, paying bills, doing everything ‘right’, and still ending up sleeping rough because the rent rose faster than your income.

This isn’t a story about ‘them’.
It’s a story about ‘us’ - our family, our friends, our neighbours.

We love tidy explanations.
We love to assume people make bad choices.
But the truth is far more ordinary:

☘️ A relationship ends.
☘️ A job disappears.
☘️ A medical bill arrives.
☘️ A landlord sells.
☘️ A single moment tips everything over.

That’s all it takes. So next time you see someone sleeping rough, try not to look away. A nod. A smile. A warm drink. A moment of recognition. It costs nothing, and it reminds someone that they’re still seen, still human, still worth something.

Because the line between stability and struggle is thinner than we want to believe.

And the only thing that separates many of us from that park bench is a set of circumstances - nothing more. 🏡

🌨️ After what feels like 47 consecutive years of rain - the kind where even the ducks are filing complaints - it’s hard not to think of our friends sleeping rough. Add the cooler temps and it really hits home how lucky many of us are to have warm beds, dry clothes, and a roof that doesn’t leak.

A couple of our volunteers decided to channel their inner treasure hunters today, heading out on a mission to find bedding and warmth for some of our friends living in tents or on the streets. Think ‘Amazing Race’, but with more puddles and fewer prizes.

A massive shoutout to Amy and her team at Anaconda Stores Port Macquarie for donating some sleeping bags. An act of generosity that will make a real and immediate difference.

Another to Port Macquarie Central Road Lifeline Shop who donated pillows & blankets, and discounted some warm clothing.

Honestly, the kindness was flowing more freely than the rain, and that’s saying something.

Someone wise once said that ‘those with privilege have a responsibility to care for those with less’. Even with the cost of living squeezing everyone, we still see businesses & locals showing up for each other, proving that kindness is alive and well in Port Macquarie.

To everyone who helps, gives, donates, checks in, or simply cares - thank you. 💚 You’re the sunshine we’ve been waiting for….because the actual sun clearly has us on “Do Not Disturb”. ☀️

Tuesday nights at M.A.D have officially gone to the dogs…and the humans…and honestly, anyone who appreciates a flawless, flame-grilled masterpiece.

The absolute legends over at Coastal Advisory Australia completely take over the shift; generously donating, prepping, and cooking up a mouthwatering Aussie favourite: beef burgers loaded with all the trimmings. The result? Pure, unadulterated, salivating joy! 🤤 Not only do our human friends happily line up for seconds, but we are pretty sure a few local dogs try to sneak into the queue twice, too. (We see you, pups. No judgment here).

The best part? Our Tuesday night volunteers go home feeling incredibly nourished as well - though, to be fair, that is less about the food and more about the soul-charging energy of the Coastal Advisory Australia crew. Turns out, they don't just know how to crunch numbers and balance spreadsheets; they also cook a mean BBQ to boot!

We truly cannot overstate how much these beautiful collaborations mean to us at M.A.D. When local businesses step up to volunteer their time, their deep compassion, and their hard-earned resources, magic happens. Thank you, Coastal Advisory Australia for bringing so much love, laughs, and top-tier grill mastery to our local community. You are proof that big hearts and great business go hand-in-hand! 🍔 💚

A huge shout out to the wonderful team at Port Macquarie Community Health Centre (Mid North Coast Health) for donating their leftover bacon and rolls from their International Nurses Day celebration on Tuesday. 👩‍⚕️

12 May marks Florence Nightingale’s birthday and honours the dedication, skill and compassion of nurses around the world; and clearly, that care extends far beyond their patients and straight into the heart of our community. 💙

Thanks to their generosity, it looks like our friends might be treated to everyone’s favourite….bacon and egg rolls on the menu. 🥓 🥚 🥯

Thank you, nurses, for everything you do - in the clinic, in the community, and everywhere in between. 🙏🏻

For many, Mothers Day is a celebration of that care. But we also know that for others in our community, this day can feel a little different. Our mission is to provide more than just food on a plate. We strive to offer the same non-judgemental acceptance you'd find in a chosen family. No strings, no labels; just connection and a community that sees you.
