It was great to have Federal Leader of the Opposition and Shadow Assistant Minister for Productivity & Deregulation with us to hear that the Coalition will prioritise skilled migrants, including skilled construction workers in its migration policy. The shortage of skilled building trades people is a major capacity constraint holding back productivity in our industry and Master Builders is calling for the needs of the construction industry to be given higher priority in the Federal Government's migration system.

Builders value the support from Angus Taylor MP and Senator Maria Kovacic for the thousands of small home building businesses battling with red tape and the impact of high inflation.

Master Builders NSW is proud to announce Carpentry apprentice Nicola Wall, who is the winner of the Women in Trades Apprentice of the Year award at the 2026 Apprentice Employment Network NSW & ACT Awards! Master Builders celebrated Nicola's success together with her host employer Total Construction.

We also extend a huge congratulations to Carpentry apprentice James Cason for his exceptional achievements as a finalist in the Apprentice of the Year category. Master Builders celebrated with his host employer Reliant Constructions.

Master Builders NSW were also finalists in the Excellence in Group training category, congratulations to the team.

The apprentices were celebrated at the awards dinner on Friday 9th October 2026 at the Four Seasons hotel in Sydney, together with their family and friends.

More young people are seeing a building trade as the ticket to success. HSC student enrolments in vocational subjects is up 20% with construction the most popular along with hospitality, As Master Builders CEO Matthew Po***ck tells the The Daily Telegraph a building and construction trade is AI proof and therefore a secure pathway to a huge range of opportunities including starting your own business.

High Inflation Hits Building Activity

The number of building approvals for new housing in NSW has fallen as the Federal Government fails to get inflation under control and the Reserve Bank responds with higher interest rates. Headline inflation jumped from 3.% to 4% in August with underlying inflation high at 3.6%. As our CEO Matthew Po***ck told the Federal Government does not have the policy settings right.

Prime Minister Anothony Albanese says increasing property taxes will give young people more accerss to home ownership but high inflation means that as house prices continue to fall housing affordability is not getting any better.

Great to report that our Staff Conference 2026 was a huge success. Our Chief Executive Officer Matthew Po***ck brought the whole team together including from from across the state including the Sydney Head Office, our specialist Aprenticeship Services Centre in Norwest and our statewide network of regional offices to connect with collaegues and engage with the strategy that will see Master Builders NSW build on more than 150 years of history to remain the largest and most influential building and construction organisation in NSW advancing the success of our members in the commercial/industrial, residential and civil engineering/infrastructure construction sectors.

The Master Builders 2026 Regional Excellence Awards Program culminated with the Newcastle Excellence in Building Awards. Builders from across the Hunter, Central Coast, Manning, Oxley and Tamworth Regions won well deserved accolades including which was recogised for its work on the Terra Anima House on the NSW Midnorth Coast. won both the Innovation & Environmental Sustainability Award and Swimming Pool of the Year Award. Congratulations JM Building, a fantastic project!
