What leads someone to human tr4fficking?

For many v*lnerable women and girls in Nepal, it begins long before they ever reach the border.

After her marriage broke down, she returned home only to face rejection from her community. She was ab*sed, isolated and made to feel like she had nothing left.

“I tried to hang myself 3 times but I couldn’t do it.”

With nowhere left to turn, she borrowed money from a friend and travelled alone toward the Indian border. V*lnerable to tr4ffickers waiting for girls exactly like her.

But before she could cross, she was intercepted by our border surveillance team.

Instead of falling into tr4fficking, she was taken to safety. She received counselling, support and skills training alongside other women carrying stories just like hers.

Slowly, she began healing.

Today, she works as a border surveillance counsellor helping intercept v*lnerable girls before tr4ffickers can expl0it them.

A girl who was once intercepted is now helping protect others.

"Sl@very doesn’t happen anymore" is something many people believe - but the reality is very different.

Modern sl@very and human tr@fficking are still affecting vulnerable women and girls around the world today. In Nepal, tr@fficking often happens as girls are searching for safety, work, or opportunity.

But there is hope. Our frontline border interception teams are helping stop tr@fficking before explo!tation begins.

This is what we need to save more girls from sl@very over the next year. Would you get behind it?

Modern sl@very is real and for girls in Nepal, we've found a solution.

Help us put more eyes on the ground.

People often ask - Why is tr@fficking so common between Nepal and India?

Answer - Because Nepal and India share an open, unregulated border, people can cross freely every day. But this also makes it one of the busiest human tr@fficking corridors in the world, with thousands of vulnerable girls at risk each year.

That’s why EDM’s work is so important. Our teams are present at key border crossings, where they take the time to talk with girls, ask thoughtful questions, and recognise warning signs others might miss.

More eyes means more girls rescued. Take watch with us, this End of Financial Year. Give Now!

It took a Traffic(k) Stopper to get these girls to safety.

These two young women were intercepted at the border. Human tr@fficking almost claimed them.
But not this time. Because our staff were there.

Help us put more eyes on the ground.
More eyes means more girls rescued.

What is the education situation in Nepal?

For many girls living in remote communities across Nepal, education is not guaranteed.

Poverty, lack of access and financial pressure force many children to leave school early.

Numa* grew up in a family of 8 children where there was little food and no money for education. While her older siblings never had the chance to study, Numa fought to stay in school because she believed education could change her future.

She carried stone and cement at a construction site while trying to continue her studies and dreamed of becoming a nurse.

But after Grade 10, she could no longer afford her education.

Without further schooling or opportunity, she became vulnerable to abu$e, rejection and
explo!tation.

Eventually, she travelled alone toward the border carrying what she described as “her own pain and sorrow.”

At the border, trained female surveillance staff intercepted her before tr4ffickers could explo!t her vulnerability.

She was taken to safety, received counselling and slowly rebuilt her life.

Today, Numa works at that same border helping protect other vulnerable girls before tr4ffickers can reach them.

Over the past 6 years, EDM’s frontline prevention work has grown into a network of protection, restoration, and long-term care for vulnerable girls at risk of tr@fficking.

So far, together we have:

• Rescued 5376 girls from potential tr@fficking situations

• Established 13 border interception booths across high-risk regions

• Opened one emergency shelter alongside each booth for immediate crisis care

• Built 2 safe homes

• Expanded vocational training opportunities to help survivors rebuild independent futures

• Hired a dedicated aftercare coordinator to follow up with rescued girls and ensure they remain safe and thriving

• Provided trauma-informed support through 3 trained counsellors working directly with survivors

• Welcomed 215 girls into our safe homes since 2020

• Educated 113474 people about the dangers and warning signs of tr@fficking

• Handed 4690 tr@fficking cases over to police for law enforcement follow-up

• Reunited 4764 girls with their families before they were lost forever

But the need continues to grow.

Our next step is to fortify the booths already in place - putting more trained eyes on the ground, strengthening frontline protection, and increasing our ability to identify vulnerable girls before trafficking occurs.
