It's 8:00am on a Wednesday...
The doors open, the volunteers arrive, and nobody asks,
"What's for lunch?"
Because the first question is always...
"What have we got?"
Today's menu isn't planned weeks in advance. It's created from the generous donations that have arrived. Fresh produce, rescued food, and a little creativity are transformed into a delicious three-course meal for our community.
While our chefs and the food prep team begin chopping, stirring, and cooking, another team quietly transforms the hall. Tables are set. Chairs are arranged. Flowers are placed. Cutlery is polished. Every place setting says the same thing:
"You matter. You are welcome here."
Someone picks a Word for the Day and carefully writes it on the blackboard alongside today's menu. It's a small tradition, but it often starts conversations, brings a smile, or offers a little encouragement to someone who needs it.
By lunchtime, what began as a busy kitchen and an empty hall has become something much more than a place to eat.
It has become a place of friendship, dignity, hope, and community.
This is what happens every Wednesday morning at the St Thomas Soup Kitchen.
And it all begins at 8:00am.
