Ever wondered what happens to your old mattress when you recycle with Soft Landing? 🛏♻️ Here’s a look behind the scenes:

🚚 Collection: Each day, our team collects mattresses from kerbsides, depots and businesses, or receives deliveries directly to our sites.

🖐 Deconstruction: Starting early each morning, our team manually deconstructs mattresses, carefully separating materials like foam, steel, timber and textiles.

♻️ Recovery: We prepare these materials for reuse and recycling — baling foam, compacting steel and sorting everything for recovery.

🔄 Reuse & Recycling: We send recovered materials to our partners to be reused or transformed into new products, including carpet underlay, roof sheeting and mulch.

This hands-on process maximises resource recovery while creating meaningful jobs for people experiencing barriers to employment 🌏🌟

Did you know? We're a not-for-profit social enterprise and registered charity 🤲 While keeping mattresses out of landfill is a main focus, we're also on a mission to create a positive social impact in communities across Australia 🛏️🌟

Here’s how our model works:

♻️ For every 23 mattresses we collect and recycle each day, we create a job for someone who really needs one.

👥 Around 75% of our employees join us while facing barriers to work – including former refugees, young people, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, and those who’ve experienced long-term unemployment or contact with the justice system.

💰 We invest around 65% of our revenue into staff wages, creating stable jobs that come with training, support, and a sense of purpose.

We were honoured to recently welcome Her Excellency the Honourable Sam Mostyn AC, Governor-General of Australia and Patron of Community Resources, to our Soft Landing Smithfield facility. Community Resources is the national Aboriginal-led not-for-profit organisation of which Soft Landing is proud to be a part.

The visit shone a national spotlight on our work and impact as one of Australia’s leading social enterprises, and the growing role the sector is playing in delivering meaningful employment, environmental and community outcomes.

During her visit, Her Excellency met our team, heard about their employment journeys and toured our mattress recycling operations.

Her Excellency said:

“This is a story about restoring dignity through work. It is about creating opportunities for people who have been overlooked, underestimated or locked out of employment, while honouring the knowledge, culture and leadership of First Nations peoples and welcoming those who have come to Australia seeking a chance to contribute, belong and thrive.

“The workers were very kind in sharing their stories; they are part of great modern Australia that I love to celebrate, particularly in an organisation that cares so deeply – an Aboriginal-led organisation doing this extraordinary work.”

Indu Balachandran, Co-Chair of Community Resources, said:

“Her Excellency's patronage of Community Resources and her visit to Soft Landing are an important recognition of what social enterprises can achieve — creating real jobs and pathways for people facing complex barriers to work while delivering strong environmental and economic outcomes.”

One question we get asked is: "Why does Soft Landing dismantle mattresses by hand instead of just using a machine?" 🤔 Good question.

By taking mattresses apart by hand, our teams can carefully separate materials like:
🔹 Steel
🔹 Foam
🔹 Timber
🔹 Textiles

This helps maximise the amount of material that can be recovered for reuse and recycling and preserves quality – meaning we're supporting the circular economy and reducing the need for more raw resources.

It also means we're creating jobs. We employ people experiencing barriers to work, including former refugees, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and young people.

Our manual model shows that when it comes to recycling, HOW something is processed matters too! ♻️💪
