Soft Landing

Soft Landing Soft Landing is an Australian not-for-profit social enterprise that recycles end-of-life mattresses and bed bases to keep them out of landfill.

For every 23 mattresses we collect and recycle, we create a job for someone who really needs one 🛏️♻️ For every 35 mattresses that we collect and recycle each day, we can create a job for someone who really needs one.

It’s National Reconciliation Week (27 May – 3 June), and at Soft Landing, we’re for reconciliation.

What does it mean to be ‘All In’?

Across our organisation, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff and non-Aboriginal staff work together side by side. We’re united by our purpose to support people, strengthen communities and create a better future for people and planet.

We’re stronger because of the knowledge, experience and leadership Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people bring to our work.

But being ‘All In’ means recognising that reconciliation is not something that sits with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people alone – it belongs to all of us, and it requires consistent action.

It means being honest about what we’re doing well, where we can keep improving, and how we can keep moving forward with care and respect.

This week, join us in taking time to pause, learn and think about how we keep walking together toward reconciliation — this week, and every day.

We had a great time at Coffs Waste Conference last week! ♻️ It was a big few days of sharing ideas, talking about mattress recycling, and meeting people who care about keeping valuable materials out of landfill.

Soft Landing exhibited alongside another social enterprise in our organisation, Resource Recovery Australia, chatting with councils, industry partners and waste professionals about mattress recycling, material recovery and how we create jobs for people experiencing barriers to employment.

We were also proud to have David Petrie, our General Manager, present on achieving 100% diversion for mattresses — and what it takes to recycle mattresses properly at scale 🛏️♻️

A big thank you to City of Coffs Harbour and Impact Environmental for putting together such a valuable few days.

And thank you to everyone who stopped by our stall, asked questions, joined the session and shared ideas with us. We loved being part of it!

🛏️ Did you know you can recycle your old mattress when you buy a new one? ♻️

Soft Landing works with retailers across Australia to make mattress recycling part of the purchase process.

That means when your new mattress arrives, your old one can be collected and recycled properly.

What are the benefits?
🛏️ Mattresses are bulky and hard to dispose of – letting us collect your old one makes your new purchase stress-free!
♻️ They’re full of materials that can be recovered and reused
🌏 Recycling keeps them out of landfill and puts those resources back to use

Next time you’re buying a mattress, ask if your retailer partners with Soft Landing to recycle the old one 🛏️♻️

🦺 World Day for Safety and Health at Work ⛑️ Today is a global reminder that safe work doesn’t happen by accident – it comes from the right systems, training and culture on the ground.

At Soft Landing, safety is part of how we work every day 💪

From manually dismantling mattresses 🛏️ to operating across multiple sites, our teams are supported by clear processes and strong safety practices.

That’s why we’re proud to be ISO certified across:

✔ Occupational Health and Safety (ISO 45001)
✔ Environmental Management (ISO 14001)
✔ Quality Management (ISO 9001)

It’s not just about meeting standards, it’s about making sure our people go home safe, every day.

Today is Earth Day 🌏 A global reminder to reduce waste, protect resources and rethink how we use and dispose of everyday products.

Mattresses are a good example of the challenge.
Around 1.8 million are discarded in Australia each year — bulky, difficult to process and often ending up in landfill 🛏️

But they’re also full of recoverable materials.

At Soft Landing, we recycle mattresses by hand, recovering steel, foam and timber and keeping those resources in use ♻️

Recycling your mattress with us reduces waste, supports a circular economy and creates meaningful jobs for people facing barriers to employment 💪

Real change comes from doing things differently — and making better use of what we already have. And it can start with something as simple as your old mattress.

👉 What’s one way you’re rethinking waste this Earth Day?

April’s full of public holidays and cooler weather — a good time to tackle those long-overdue clean-ups, including bulky items that are easy to put off 🛏️

💡 If you have an old mattress to get rid of, they don’t belong in landfill. They’re bulky, flammable and slow to break down — but full of materials that can be recovered and reused.

At Soft Landing, we collect and recycle mattresses to:

♻️ Keep them out of landfill
🛠️ Recover materials like steel, foam and timber for reuse and recycling
👷 Create jobs for people facing barriers to employment

Have an old mattress to get rid of this April?

It was great to be part of the Future Waste Resources Symposium 2026 in Brisbane last month, where our Senior Business Development Manager, Jeff Tucker, presented on best-practice mattress recycling and what it takes to make it work on the ground 🛏♻️

Hosted by The Waste Recycling Industry Association Queensland (WRIQ), the symposium brought together councils, industry and government to focus on some of the biggest challenges facing Queensland’s waste sector — from improving household recycling to strengthening collaboration across the system.

As Jeff shared, mattresses remain one of the most challenging household waste streams — bulky, difficult to process and often sent to landfill 🛏

The biggest barrier isn’t intent, it’s access. People want to recycle, but the infrastructure isn’t always there.

It was a great chance to connect with others across the sector, share what’s working nationally, and be part of the broader conversation about how Queensland can lift recycling rates and reduce landfill pressure ♻️
