💗 Inspired by the women shaping our Pilbara!

PHIC was proud to attend the Women of the Pilbara Forum, celebrating the women making a difference across our industries, businesses and communities.

It was fantastic to see women from across the region come together to share experiences, build connections and celebrate their achievements.

From leading businesses and driving industry forward to supporting local communities, women make an important contribution to the Pilbara every day.

The forum was a powerful reminder of the value of female leadership, the importance of creating opportunities for women to thrive and the positive impact of strong, diverse voices in positions of influence.

A big thank you to the Port Hedland Chamber of Commerce & Industry (PHCCI) for bringing everyone together and creating such a positive space for connection, collaboration and celebrating women’s leadership.

🏗️ Major investment in the Pilbara’s future

PLS has approved its $1.9 billion P2000 Project at Pilgangoora, approximately 140 km south-east of Port Hedland, the largest investment in the company’s history.

The expansion will double annual spodumene concentrate production capacity to approximately two million tonnes and is expected to create:

✅ More than 1,000 construction jobs
✅ Around 500 ongoing operational roles
✅ Opportunities for local and Traditional Owner businesses across the Pilbara

Alongside P2000, PLS expects to invest up to $650 million in supporting infrastructure, including a new accommodation village, mine services facility and road upgrades.

For Port Hedland and the wider Pilbara, investment of this scale creates opportunities extending beyond the mine site to the businesses, workers and supply chains that support our region.

PHIC welcomes this significant investment and the opportunities it presents for the Pilbara.

We look forward to PLS providing an update on P2000 and its operations directly to PHIC members at our November Community Industry Forum.

📢 Work is underway on the 2027 Economic Significance of the Port of Port Hedland report.

Port Hedland Industries Council (PHIC) is pleased to once again partner with ACIL Allen to deliver the 2027 Economic Significance of the Port of Port Hedland report.

So, why does this report matter?

Port Hedland is one of the most important industrial and economic centres in Australia. The industries connected to the Port support jobs, businesses and communities across Port Hedland, the Pilbara, Western Australia and the nation.

The Economic Significance report helps put that contribution into numbers - providing an independent assessment of the economic activity, employment, income, taxation and royalties generated by the Port and its associated industries.

PHIC is pleased to be delivering this important work with the support of our project partners:

🤝 Port Hedland Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PHCCI)
🤝 Town of Port Hedland
🤝 Pilbara Development Commission (PDC)
🤝 Regional Development Australia Pilbara (RDA Pilbara)

Over the coming months, participating organisations will provide operational and expenditure data to ACIL Allen. This information will be used to undertake the economic modelling and build an updated picture of Port Hedland’s economic contribution.

The previous report showed the enormous scale of this contribution. In 2022–23, the Port Hedland Port Supply Chain contributed $103.7 billion to the Australian economy and $2.01 billion to the Gross Regional Product of the Town of Port Hedland.

The 2027 report will build on this work and help demonstrate the continued importance of Port Hedland and the Pilbara to our region and the broader Australian economy.

🌸 Pink Pilbara Breakfast 2026 💗

PHIC was proud to be part of the Pink Pilbara Breakfast, hosted by the wonderful Hedland Well Women's Centre!

It was a special morning bringing together members of the Port Hedland community to show our support for those affected by cancer and celebrate the strength, resilience and generosity of our local community. 🎀

The Pink Pilbara Breakfast plays an important role in raising funds for cancer prevention, screening and support services, helping ensure women and families across Hedland can access vital support close to home.

With breast cancer affecting thousands of Australians each year, events like this are an important reminder of the value of awareness, connection and community support. 💕

A big thank you to the Hedland Well Women's Centre, volunteers, sponsors and everyone who helped make the morning such a wonderful success.

Together, we can continue to support the health and wellbeing of our Pilbara community. 🌸

🐾 Working together to manage vertebrate pests in Port Hedland
Port Hedland Industries Council (PHIC) and participating industry members are continuing the Vertebrate Pest Management Program (VPMP) across the Port Hedland region.

The program supports coordinated and evidence-based management of vertebrate pests, helping to protect local environmental values and support responsible industry operations.

Through collaboration across industry, the program helps:
🌿 Protect local ecosystems and environmental values
🐾 Reduce the impacts of vertebrate pests
🤝 Coordinate management activities across participating sites
📊 Support evidence-based environmental management

By working together, industry can take a coordinated approach to environmental challenges and contribute to positive outcomes across the Port Hedland region.

Keeping watch on our marine environment 🌊

Did you know the Port of Port Hedland is part of Australia’s largest and most awarded pest surveillance initiative?

During the 2026 summer survey period, SWASP monitoring was undertaken across the Port and surrounding areas using Settlement Arrays, eDNA analysis and visual inspections.

The good news? No Introduced Marine Species were detected during the February–April survey period.

Delivered by DPIRD WA in collaboration with Pilbara Ports and PHIC, SWASP is an important example of industry and government working together to monitor and protect Port Hedland’s marine environment. 🌊

By supporting ongoing surveillance and early detection, this collaborative program helps ensure potential marine biosecurity risks can be identified and responded to quickly.

💡Innovation Grants Program - Got an idea that could make a difference in the Pilbara?💡

Fortescue is pleased to announce the opening of its Innovation Grants Program, structured to empower eligible community organisations and non-for-profits within the Pilbara region.

📍Eligible locations: Council boundaries of Port Hedland, Karratha, Ashburton and East Pilbara📍

Funding of up to $25,000 per initiative is available to support projects that deliver measurable social, environmental, or economic benefits.

Understanding the Port from the water 🚢

PHIC’s Board recently had the opportunity to tour the Port of Port Hedland by boat, gaining a first-hand perspective of the scale and complexity of operations.

For PHIC, understanding the environment in which industry operates is an important part of supporting meaningful collaboration and effective engagement with government and community stakeholders.

A big thank you to our hosts Pilbara Ports for sharing their time and knowledge, and for providing valuable insight into the Port’s operations and infrastructure.
