Our next GM will take place on Fri, 2nd Oct. A short meeting, some house-keeping and some prep work leading up to the end of the year. We can then sit back, relax, have a chat and a glass of good cheer, enjoy some nibbles and perhaps look at some photos from the recent Anniversary Dinner. See you there then and visitors are especially welcome. 😃

To our wonderful community, the Members and Friends of the Port Elliot RSL will Commemorate the 25th Anniversary of Afghanistan Service in association with the Victor Harbor Sub-Branch at 11:00 AM on Sunday 11th October at the Soldiers Afghanistan Memorial on Flinders Parade, Victor Harbor. All are welcome to join us afterwards for refreshments at the Victor Harbor RSL Sub-Branch. We look forward to seeing you there and we thank you for your ongoing support for Veterans.

Our ANNUAL Trash 'n Treasure GARAGE SALE.

At the RSL Hall, 10 The Strand, Port Elliot.

Thursday 3rd September is 'Merchant Navy Day'. It commemorates the civilian seamen who served on merchant ships during both World Wars. The merchant navy played a crucial role in supplying Allied home fronts and military forces. The date marks the anniversary of the first attack on an Allied merchant ship on 3 September 1939. On this day, please pause and give a moment to reflect on the service of those who served in the merchant marine and may even have stepped ashore at one of our ports on the Fleurieu Peninsula. https://anzacportal.dva.gov.au/commemoration/days/merchant-navy-day
On this occasion, we would especially like to remember the service of Lance Weston Alfred Bennett (1922-2008) who was 2nd mate on MV Limerick when she was torpedoed off Cape Byron in early 1943. In this AI refreshed image from so long ago, here we see Lance in the chart room on the starboard side of the Limerick bridge, plotting his course. All but two of the Limerick were rescued by HMAS Colac and they safely made it back to shore to continue their good works and lives. Lance went on to a management career with the Australian Stevedoring Authority and passed away in 2008. He is survived by his four daughters and many children and grandchildren. His only son Russell Graham Weston Bennet (1943-1962) also served as a Cadet Officer with the Clan Line. Sadly Russell passed away while in service on board MV 'Clan McDonald' while berthed at Tilbury Docks, London.

On Tuesday 18 Aug, Port Elliot RSL Sub-Branch was represented by Pres. Dean Watson (L), and Sec./Treas. Nev' Thomas (R) at the 60th anniversary commemoration for Vietnam Veteran's Day (Battle of Long Tan), hosted by the Victor Harbor RSL Sub-Branch. Following a well attended lawn service at the Long Tan Cross in the Soldiers' Memorial Garden, veterans were treated to a nice lunch at the Victor Harbor RSL. Another good example of the greater cooperation now happening on the Fleurieu South Coast between the three local RSL Sub-Branches (Goolwa, Port Elliot and Victor Harbor).

Vietnam Veterans' Day is commemorated annually on August 18th.
This coming Tueday, August 18, 2026 marks the 60th Anniversary.

Originally known as 'Long Tan Day', it marks the anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan in 1966, Australia's most costly single engagement of the Vietnam War.

PERSL Members & Friends are invited to join with the Victor Harbor RSL Sub-Branch to commemorate the occasion:

The 60th anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan, will be commemorated in Victor Harbor on 18 August 2026, at the long Tan Cross in the Memorial Gardens on Flinders Parade.
The Service will commence at 11am with the community welcome to attend the service and lay wreaths.
All attendees will also be invited to attend a light luncheon afterwards at the RSL Club Rooms, 1 George Main Road, Victor Harbor, following the event.

Hi all members and friends. Our regular monthly get together will be on again Friday evening, the 5th at 5:00pm despite the cold and wet, windy weather. Apologies for the late reminder this month, (it has been hectic). We hope to see some members and friends drop in for an hour or two and catch up.

As we roll into ANZAC week with:
* the Victor Harbor march on Sunday,
* hosting a memorial service at Port Elliot Resthaven on Monday,
* operating an ANZAC Appeal table at Coles McCracken on Tuesday through to Friday,
* Dawn Service on Saturday the 25th and
culminating with our usual good old fashioned reunion BBQ, bevvies, some two-up and AFL football on Saturday afternoon,
we need to be mindful of what it's all about.

The film, "Under a Bamboo Sky" will be showing at the Victa Cinema, Apr 19 at 2:00 pm..
