SA Arid Lands Landscape Board

SA Arid Lands Landscape Board Brings you news relevant to managing landscapes in the SA Arid Lands region Landscape boards consist of seven members, including a chair.

The South Australian Arid Lands Landscape Board works with community, industry, and government agencies to ensure a sustainable approach to the management, protection and restoration of our soil, water, native plants and animals. There are nine landscape management regions in South Australia, governed by eight landscape boards and a metropolitan board. The boards work alongside community members a

nd stakeholders to develop simple and accessible five-year regional landscape plans with five priorities. The plans aims to ensure that there is a balance between the needs of regional communities and the sustainable management of the environment. Other key functions include development of water allocation plans for prescribed water resources, where applicable, and operating as the relevant authority for a range of water, land protection and animal and plant control activities. Did you know that feral pigs can have a significant impact on lambing - without you even knowing they are on your property?

Feral pigs have been found to be responsible for lamb losses of up to 30 per cent in arid and semi-arid rangelands, making sheep producers in our region particularly vulnerable. And with reports of feral pigs from the North Flinders and North East Pastoral Districts, it's good to be aware.

If you have unexpected drops in lambing rates and changes in sheep behaviour, it could be caused by feral pigs.

Clean picked or stripped sheep bones, trampled lamb carcasses or even disappearing lambs are also clues that point to predation by pigs.

If you have noticed signs that feral pigs are impacting your stock, please contact the board for information and control assistance on 8429 9666.

Anyone that joined the Rangelands Bus Trip to NSW in 2024 will freely tell you it was an experience that provided many benefits - and the Pastoral Bus Tour headed to Central Australia later this year will do the same.

Led by the SA Arid Lands Landscape Board with Andrea Tschirner from Acacia Park Consulting, you’ll be visiting properties around Alice Springs that showcase projects and programs helping to manage grazing country in a highly variable climatic zone.

On this tour, you’ll learn from knowledgeable pastoralists implementing technology and practical changes to add value to existing production systems and observe how family-run businesses navigate management challenges like climatic variability and succession.

Don’t miss this opportunity to be on board. Find out more and apply at https://www.landscape.sa.gov.au/saal/events/central-australia-pastoral-bus-tour

Ferals stand less of a chance of taking hold on four properties in the North East Pastoral after staff attended a Trapping Workshop at Olary late in May.

Eight people heard from Tom Finlay of Flinders Feral Animal Control and Barry Kelly of Pigbaitta as part of the workshop.

Barry presented feral pig control information with demonstrations of his bait station and shared the benefits of using baiting with the system.

Tom provided an introduction on thermal equipment and gave a trapping demonstration aimed at wild dogs, foxes and cats.

Thanks to the presenters and to the Olary Hotel for hosting the workshop.

📣📣CALLING EARLY-CAREER PASTORALISTS AND STATION STAFF

We're offering a FREE course that will build your knowledge of how rangeland health and beef production work together.

We're bringing you Alison Kain and Caleb Schwartz, Livestock industries extension staff from the NT Department of Agriculture and Fisheries from Alice Springs, for a one-day workshop at Macumba Station covering:

👉 Introduction to rangeland environments, land systems and how pastures grow
👉 Land condition
👉 Go out into the paddock to identify plants species and their value
👉 Principles of cattle nutrition
👉 Weeds and poisonous plants ID

You'll walk away with solid knowledge of the importance of rangelands in beef production. Although the course is targeted at first/second year station hands, we welcome more experienced staff to join in and contribute their experience and local knowledge.

Book your seat at https://www.trybooking.com/DMOKT. Registrations close 17 June.

This workshop is funded by the Northern Hub via the Future Drought Fund.

Locally, we're talking carbon accounting and a workshop we're running in Quorn later this month. If you attended one of our earlier workshops, this will be a refresher, before giving you a guided walk through of inputting data into carbon accounting software.

If you haven't dipped your toe into carbon markets, carbon farming or how they work, this workshop is still a good place to start.

Bring along a laptop for the hands-on session and if you want to have a go an entering information from your own property, you can stay on afterwards for help in doing so.

Despite flooding and road closure challenges, the board's Biosecurity team was able to sneak a window of aerial pig control in the internationally significant Coongie Lakes Ramsar area and parts of the Cooper Creek.

The program removed 79 feral pigs and nearly 200 other large feral herbivores from the area, reducing the risk of habitat destruction and erosion impacts

Feral pigs have been recognised as being a potential major vector for the spread of Avian Influenza, if it is to get into Australia.

If you see or find sick or dead birds, it's important to report information to the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888.

For information on tracking and preventing the spread of Bird Flu in our environment, go to https://www.cdc.gov.au/diseases/bird-flu-avian-influenza

The Kingoonya Landscape Group has found a way to build awareness about the importance of soil health and the positive effect it has on vegetation.

With soil conservation and landscape rehydration a priority learning area for group, members decided to use some of the group's project funding to provide landholders with a soil health toolkit after supporting a Mulloon rehydration workshop in 2025,

To date, six properties have received tools to get them started on their soil journey, which will help to increase understanding of rangelands soils and their influence on native pastures and land condition.

Properties within the Kingoonya district that would like to receive a soil health toolkit can get in touch with Tori.

Been trialling a free version of a kit tool and ready to set it up properly? Thinking about taking the leap on an Optiweigh? Curious about remote water monitoring, virtual fencing, or pasture biomass tools but want a hand getting started?

If that sounds familiar, then this grant round is for you.

The Smart Grazing, Stronger Lands project is here to help producers turn good ideas into on-ground action.

Over two years, this project will support rangelands pastoralists to implement grazing management tools on their properties – with personalised mentoring.

There’s two ways to get involved:
✅ Mentoring sites — 1:1 training and ongoing access to experts
✅ Demonstration sites — up to $35,000 for tool/tech setup and on-ground works

Applications are currently open. Find out more at https://www.landscape.sa.gov.au/saal/get-involved/grants-funding

Applications most close on Monday 22 June.

The Smart Grazing, Stronger Lands is supported by the Australian Government through funding from the Climate-Smart Agriculture Program under the Natural Heritage Trust.
