No Shocks is an electric shock avoidance presentation developed
through funding provided by SafeWork SA's Augusta
Zadow Award Grant and supported by the SA Skills Commission.
This free two-hour education awareness presentation is designed
for apprentices and the tradespeople who supervise them,
as well as young workers in the construction industry aged 16-23,
in response to a high number of reported electric shock incidents
increasing each year, from 252 reported shocks in 2020 to 440
reported shocks in 2024.
In the first half of our presentation, Michelle Rath delivers her story as a mother who lost her son due to an electrocution in a roof space in 2013. Michelle’s harrowing story and the impact it has had on her family, instils the importance of electrical safety.
In the second half of the presentation, Chris Green delivers technical and practical information on how to avoid receiving an electric shock. His in-depth knowledge as an electrician of over 20 years, combined with his understanding of Electrical safety, imparts lifesaving information on participants.
With electric shocks on the rise in South Australia each year, the No Shocks education presentation has been developed to try and drastically reduce this number by focusing on this specific problems in a first of its kind.
SafeWork SA received 375 electric shock notifications between October 2023 and September 2024. While 331 electric shocks met the definition of a notifiable dangerous incident, only 201 of these were reported to SafeWork SA within 24 hours. In Australia over the last 10 years, 46 people have died at work, of these, 25 (54%) were as a result of electrocution.
