Thanks and people who came along to the Ghost Creek Placemaking Project Launch on Thursday night and Guided Walk through Glanville on Saturday.
Extra points to those hardy folk who braved rain on Saturday!

Both events featured some fascinating and really well-informed conversations amongst the audience.

We'll be doing the guided walk again in September for Nature Festival, around the time that the guided soundwalk will become available (via mobile app).

This project is ongoing and we gratefully welcome any thoughts, memories, speculations or scurrilous rumours you may wish to share about Hawkers Creek and it's historical, cultural or ecological context.

Thank you to City of Port Adelaide Enfield for supporting this project.

Hawkers Creek disappeared because settlement and development led to degradation and infill. Things went downhill particularly after tidal flows were blocked.
Similar forces are at play today in remaining areas of wetland to the north east of Hawkers.
Efforts to return the salt-fields to wetland with tidal flows are having some success.

As part of South Australian History Month, we'll be taking a guided walk, tracing the course of Hawkers Creek through Glanville.
There will also be a launch event also, where the social, cultural and ecological history of the creek will be discussed in more detail.

There limited tickets to this guided walk event, only 10 left - please book only if you are certain you will attend.

Tickets are free but there is the opportunity to donate to Help the Mangroves when you book a ticket.

This guided walk will trace where Hawker Creek once ran through the Glanville/Port Adelaide area, drawing on Kaurna, settler and ecological history.

Dry Creek is a low-lying coastal landscape, with complex soils, flooding influences and sea level rise to consider. While often talked about as a future housing site, this is just part of the saltfields.

Hear from Dr Emily Leyden, research lead for Shifting Salts, about future opportunities for shaping the salt fields to positively affect water quality, ecosystems and Adelaide’s northern coast for future generations.

FREE Event. All Welcome.

General Admission In-person: 34 Nile Street, Port Adelaide SA

Hi everyone!
This is a place to share history and stories about Hawkers Creek, a tidal creek that once ran through Glanville.
Stay tuned for information and events relating to the Hawkers Creek, Ghost Creek Placemaking Project, proudly supported by the City of Port Adelaide Enfield

The project is still in the research phase, so your contributions are very welcome!

Any creek is part of a wider ecology, so we're also interested in your thoughts about the surrounding vegetation, topography and cultural relations, both Kaurna and settler.

This image, apparently from a 1941 Title document, documents the shape of the creek as it ran from the Causeway to Carlisle Street. You can get a sense of the significant width of the original creek as it narrowed towards Carlisle St, where a little ferry service once ran to enable people to cross.

*You will note if scrolling down, that the content relates to an earlier Placemaking project from 2020, Animal Stories of Port Adelaide. That project is now finished but we figured the local history interest would translate well for current page members, so the Page has been retained but renamed.
