Strzelecki Lions is inviting local organisations to apply for financial support for worthy local projects. Applications must be received by 21 March 2026 at the latest for decision-making at our April meeting.
We offer some guidelines to help us understand:
• what your project aims to achieve,
• how it will benefit your club, school, community organisation and/or Strzelecki Lions; and
• how Strzelecki Lions can help your project.

We would be happy to work with you to go through the project plan together to achieve the best possible outcomes, e.g. through joint publicity, awareness-raising at Lions Markets. This may give you the opportunity to adjust your application to achieve both your and our objectives.

Guidelines for you to consider
• Name of submitting organisation
• Contact person and contact details -- phone, email (preferably with back-up contact)
• Project objective and description
• Total cost of project, if relevant
• Your and /or other organisation contribution to the project (if relevant)
• How the project can help community or strengthen your organisation
• Any third party approval necessary for the project (e.g. Shire, VicRoads, Gov Department)
• How you will promote the project and how Lions might help with publicity or other means
• How you will implement the partnership with Lions or Lions activities (eg. Markets, Landscape Country website, Facebook)

We are happy to help. Please submit your application and/or any enquiries by email to:

Victoria Fire disaster receives a $6250 – plus -- boost!
Three local organisations have combined forces to announce direct financial assistance of $6250 towards the Lions Need for Feed effort.
This includes $1250, plus a substantial contribution of Care Packs, from the Loch Community Development Association; $2000 from the Loch Opshop (Opportunity Loch); and $3000 as the total of all gate donations at the recent Lions Sunday Loch Market.
Added to this was the amazing initiative by Fiona Cox from the Poowong Hotel, whose efforts brought out the best of the community, with around 300 Personal Care packs going to affected families in the Ruffy and surrounding areas. All the Care Packs and 3 loads of hay were arranged thanks to the connection between the CFAs of Poowong and Ruffy.
Longstanding Strzelecki Lions member Noel Gregg was involved in helping Graeme Cockerel establish the Need for Feed movement 20 years ago during the Millenium Drought, and has since seen it provide various forms of assistance ($60 million hay value alone) for families affected by fires, drought and communities throughout Australia – always on a volunteer basis.
At an Open LCDA community meeting in Loch on 12 February, Noel said “As a community, we need to keep focused on the ongoing need. While the worst of the fires are hopefully over, the grazing land is still black; livestock and pets are still suffering; and families and communities are doing it really tough. The need will not go away overnight, and will be here for some time to come.
“It’s wonderful to see all these local volunteer organisations come together at a time of community need. On behalf of Strzelecki Lions, we want to thank all the volunteer organisations and in particular everyone who were so touched by the disaster and donated in their various ways, including at the Sunday Market Gate.
“The spirit of giving was evident in so many people dragging out their cards, and the many children proudly dropping a few coins into the buckets. The spirit of giving for a worthy cause!”

Hay heavy lifting heading north. “Help is badly needed. It’s a truly awful situation. Fires have created havoc and burned thousands of acres of fodder and stored hay, killed cattle and destroyed buildings and farmhouses. Hay. The heavy lifting has just started” said local farmer Chris Lancey, as another load of hay was being loaded to go north to fire devastated areas. By mid-week, Chris would have freighted around 200 round bales to Euroa and beyond, all donated by local farmers such as Cliff and Luke Wallace; Maurie, Ted and Reece Attenborough and Russell Motton. That’s about 80 tons of fodder, or roughly 400kg per bale. That’s a lot of heavy lifting. Members of the Strzelecki Lions Club were there to support the Lions “Need for Feed” drive right throughout South Gippsland, and urge the community to continue their efforts through coming weeks and months. Local Strzelecki Lions Club member Cliff Wallace, who has helped co-ordinate some of these early donations, points out that it’s just the beginning. “Good grassland has been burnt, with little chance of re-growth in the short term. Thousands and thousands of starving cattle and sheep need feed immediately just to stay alive. Then the farmers and livestock will need a lot of ongoing support to regain health, let alone thrive. We need to stay focussed on how we can support our community”.
The road to recovery will be a big and ongoing task, and is now being arranged by a multitude of networks, right throughout South Gippsland and beyond. Cash, fodder or non-perishables can be arranged through the Lions website.

With a reminder that the fire season is approaching, Poowong CFA volunteers hosted an Open Day last Saturday. Paul Hawker, also a Lions member, donned his safety gear, a fire truck was washed down, and equipment was on display. Oh, plus a Lions sausage sizzle helped fire up the locals. Interested in helping? Just drop in to the wash down most Sundays or chat on 57592376.
