Lions Eye Health Program

The Cooroy Pomona Lions Club is rolling out free children's vision screenings across Noosa and the Noosa Hinterland through the Lions Eye Health Program - Australia (LEHP), with local volunteers visiting schools, kindergartens and community events to identify undetected eye problems before they affect learning and development.

According to the Lions Eye Health Program, 1 in 5 children has an undetected vision condition. The screenings go beyond a basic eyesight check, assessing visual acuity, astigmatism, eye alignment, depth perception, colour vision and other issues that may require referral to an optometrist or ophthalmologist. LEHP says its program is among the most comprehensive children's vision screening services operating in Australia as up to 80% of learning is processed through the eyes.

Local screenings have already been delivered at Cooroy State School, Pomona & District Kindergarten, Monkland State School, Widgee State School and the Gympie Kids Day Out community event.

Club president and qualified LEHP facilitator Nick Cooke said local results were regularly reflecting the national 1 in 5 rate and sometimes exceeding it. "Many children simply don't realise they have a vision issue because they assume everybody sees the world the same way they do," said Nick.

The club is encouraging schools, kindergartens, childcare centres, sporting clubs and community organisations to book free screening sessions, while also seeking more volunteers to train as vision screeners. Since the national program began in 2018, LEHP has carried out more than 50,000 screenings and referred more than 10,782 children for further assessment, highlighting the value of early detection.

๐Ÿฅณ Happy 54th Birthday Cooroy Pomona Lions Club ๐ŸŽ‰

Last night, the Cooroy Pomona Lions Club proudly celebrated 54 years since the signing of our Charter on the 5th of May 1972.

It was a wonderful evening of fellowship, reflection and celebration as members, partners, friends and visiting Lions came together to recognise more than five decades of service to our community.

We were honoured to welcome guests from our sponsor club, Tewantin Noosa Lions Club, along with our friends from Lions Club of Gympie South and some new volunteers. Thank you for helping us celebrate this very special milestone.

The evening was also an opportunity to reflect on the history of the Lions Den itself. The buildings that now form the Lions Den were originally relocated, rebuilt and repurposed. The front building was the former Kybong school building, while the rear building was the old Ringtail Forestry barracks situated on Forestry land. Over many years, through volunteer labour, donated materials, grant funding and an enormous amount of determination, members transformed the buildings into the community facility we know today.

DID YOU KNOWโ“

The Cooroy Pomona Lions Club was responsible for building the gazebo in Stan Topper Park, constructing the amphitheatre stage, laying the underground water infrastructure and undertaking landscaping works within the park.

The Club also built the gazebo in Apex Park Cooroy and constructed the iconic Cooroy Clock Tower, infrastructure projects that continue to be enjoyed by locals and visitors alike.

Throughout its history, it is estimated our Club has donated well in excess of $1 million to local, national and international causes, an extraordinary achievement for a small hinterland community club.

Over the past 54 years, our Club has proudly supported countless community projects, youth initiatives, fundraising activities and welfare programs. From 44 years of the iconic King of the Mountain race, to the Family Fun Day, Breakfast Club at Pomona State School, childrenโ€™s vision screening through the Lions Eye Health Program, community BBQs, Pomona Night of Lights celebrations, Cash for Cans recycling and many other projects (too many to list) โ€” generations of members have worked tirelessly to support our community.

But beyond the projects and fundraising, the evening was also a reminder of what Lionism is truly about, friendship, fellowship, service and community spirit.

The true impact of Lions is often found in the quieter moments:

โ€ข a child receiving help they need,
โ€ข a family being supported through difficult times,
โ€ข a young person gaining confidence,
โ€ข friendships formed through volunteering,
โ€ข and a community strengthened through people simply showing up to help others.

To all members past and present, volunteers and supporters of our club, thank you. Your service has mattered, and your contribution has helped shape our community in ways both visible and invisible.

Hereโ€™s to 54 years of service, friendship and community spirit and to many more years ahead!

๐Ÿ‘๏ธ Over the past two days we conducted a Lions Eye Health Program (LEHP) Children's Vision Screening at the Pomona & District Kindergarten - an incredibly worthwhile project helping identify potential vision issues early, before they can impact a childโ€™s learning, confidence and development.

Did you know that around 1 in 5 children have an undetected vision problem?

This is the national statistic, and one that we are seeing in our local community.

Many vision issues in young children can go unnoticed, simply because children often donโ€™t realise their vision is different from anyone elseโ€™s. Our program helps ensure no child is left struggling silently.

Early detection can make a life-changing difference. It allows families to seek treatment sooner and gives educators valuable insight so they can better support each childโ€™s learning needs in the classroom.

This is exactly why the LEHP program is so important to communities like ours.

We offer this service free to schools, kindies, community groups and events

๐Ÿ™ A huge thank you to everyone involved in todayโ€™s screening and to the Kindergarten staff for welcoming us into their wonderful learning environment.

๐Ÿ‘ซ We are always looking for more volunteers to join the program as vision screeners. A Bluecard and all training is provided. It is a rewarding opportunity to directly support local children and families while making a genuine difference in the community.

If you would like to learn more about becoming a volunteer screener, please get in touch.

๐ŸŽ–๏ธPOMONA ANZAC DAY SERVICE - LEST WE FORGET ๐ŸŽ–๏ธ

This morning, the Cooroy Pomona Lions Club was honoured to attend the Pomona Dawn Service, led by the Pomona Rural Fire Brigade and supported by the Cooroy Pomona RSL Sub Branch.

After the service, we were proud to provide a free community breakfast โ€” a small way to bring people together on such an important day.

We pause to honour the 28 lives lost from Pomona. As Kenneth Lavender of Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) shared:

"Today's population in the greater Pomona area is around 3,000 people. 28 lives lost equates to approximately one percent of today's population of our community. From statistics gathered the population of Pomona in 1910 was approximately 450 people. Therefore, the loss of life at the time was around five percent for this community.

Please take a moment to consider how big the loss was to a small community. I stand here today as a representative of the Pomona community, and I am proud and honored to remember the commitment made by our past and present serving members".

A powerful reminder of the sacrifice made by those from our own town.

We will remember them.
Lest We Forget.

๐Ÿ‘“ RECYCLE FOR SIGHT ๐Ÿ‘๏ธ CHANGING LIVES, ONE PAIR AT A TIME ๐ŸŒ DONATE YOUR UNUSED GLASSES ๐Ÿ‘“

Recently our members came together to carefully pack donated glasses, preparing them for their journey to someone in need. It was fantastic to be joined by our District Governor, Kerrie McMahon, along with our Zone Chair and Club President, Nick Cooke, who also facilitates our vision program at both Club and District level.

These glasses are sent to our recycling facility right here in Queensland, where the glasses are sorted, cleaned and graded, ready to be donated. For over 26 years, this program has delivered more than 7 million refurbished pairs of spectacles to people across Africa, the Middle East, Asia, the Pacific, and beyondโ€”even reaching some of the most remote communities in the world.

๐Ÿ’› You can help us keep this impact going.
If you have old or unused glasses, drop them at any of our collection points:

Donโ€™t let them sit in a drawerโ€”pass them on and help someone see the world clearly. ๐Ÿ‘“โœจ

๐Ÿณ Following the service, the Cooroy Pomona Lions Club will be providing a free community BBQ breakfast at the fire station, and we would love for everyone to stay, connect, and share this important morning together.
