PROUD PANADANUS

It's not possible to visit the beaches along the Noosa coast and miss the bold and prominent pandanus!

Pandanus tectorius aka 'screw pine' is a striking tree with a distinctive shape that is brilliant for a feature in any coastal garden. It is hardy and will tolerate most soils but will love a sandy, poor, well-drained soil, full sun, and doesn't even mind an exposed position with salt spray!

Well known for its distinctive aerial stilt roots that help anchor itself, and large orange/red fruits that are edible. The fibrous leaves of the screw pine are also edible and can be used for weaving and thatching.

An extremely low maintenance small tree to 6m that would be the talking point of any garden. And what better way to acknowledge our amazing local biosphere by taking home a pandanus for your garden today.

Come on into the Hinter Hub to check out our Pandanus tectorius, propagated in Pomona from seed harvested ethically along our Noosa coastline. We'd love to see you!

The Hinter Hub is open Monday to Friday 8.30am-3.30pm and Saturday 8am-1.30pm.

SPECTACULAR! SPECTACULAR!

Weโ€™re celebrating one of our favourite native jewels โ€“ Brachychiton acerifolius โ€˜flame treeโ€™.

We have a limited number of large-grade flame trees in store for only $75! Many are well over 1m tall already, with a nice trunk forming โ€“ here is the lovely Adrienne demonstrating how tall they are!

Why we love it:

๐Ÿ‘‰ Native to eastern Australia (Queensland & NSW), making it a local powerhouse of biodiversity.
๐Ÿ‘‰In late spring to early summer this tree often sheds its leaves and erupts in brilliant coral-red bell-flowers that glow across the canopy.
๐Ÿ‘‰ It offers more than just beauty: the flowers provide nectar for birds, bees and butterflies, the canopy gives wildlife shelter, and the seeds were traditionally bush-tucker after roasting.
๐Ÿ‘‰ Adaptable to a range of soils (from sandy to clay) and can tolerate our sub-tropical climate conditions here in the Noosa biosphere.

Choose a full-sun spot for planting, to get the best flowering display. Give it room: it can grow between 10-40m, depending on the setting, so a great single feature tree, or for pop of colour plantings in the paddock, or to line your lengthy driveway! During establishment, keep the soil moderately moist, then let it settle into its drought-tolerant rhythm.

Why plant the flame tree:

- A show-stopping feature tree for spring & summer.
- Supports native fauna and contributes to habitat connectivity.
- Resilient once established โ€” perfect for our hinterland & coastal gardens.
- A link to Indigenous knowledge: fibre from the inner bark was used for twine and seeds for food.

Come on into the Hinter Hub to have a look at our beautiful large grade flame trees. Maybe a perfect alternative to the traditional Christmas tree too!? Weโ€™d love to see you!

BACON ANYONE!?

Check out these amazing seedpods from the graceful rainforest tree Archidendron lovelliae.

Commonly known as bacon wood, this small rainforest tree is vulnerable in the wild and has a very restricted range - found along the margins of subtropical lowland rainforest and wet sclerophyll forest on deep coastal sands from central Fraser Island to the southern end of Lake Cootharabah.

Bacon wood grows to about 5 meters which makes it fantastic for smaller spaces and would be an interesting feature in the home garden. It has a rounded habit with red flowers during spring and summer, which go on to produce orange seed pods with striking large black seeds. Flowers and seed pods attract insects, butterflies and birds which is perfect for adding to a wildlife-friendly garden.

We are working hard to support the recovery of bacon wood in the Noosa biosphere and have tubestock of the species available at the Hinter Hub.

Come on into the store to bring home the bacon today!

The Hinter Hub is open Monday to Friday 8.30am-3.30pm and Saturday 8am-1.30pm.

We have the treasured native tree Sterculia quadrifida in super tubes on our specialsโ€™ trolley for only $5!! They are growing tall and strong and are ready to be planted out after the rain.

Also known as the peanut tree, it produces distinctive orange-to-red seed pods that split open to reveal shiny black seeds that taste like peanuts (once you remove the thin lining). The foliage is lush and heart-shaped, and the form is well-suited to a feature tree or reveg plantings where a medium-sized tree is required.

Beyond its ornamental and reveg value, this tree has a deep traditional significance: Indigenous communities used the bark for fibrecraft, the leaves for wound treatments, and the seeds as a bush food.

The peanut tree prefers full sun in well-drained soils but once established it has a good tolerance for dry conditions. Itโ€™s a great shade tree growing to around 10m. And with such striking seed pods and seeds it provides colour and is very attractive to a myriad of our native birds!

We think this tree is a must have so come on down to the Hinter Hub to grab yours today. Weโ€™d love to see you!

The Hinter Hub is open Monday to Friday 8.30am-3.30pm and Saturday 8am-1.30pm.

MEET PIGFACE!

You don't see the hardy Carpobrotus glaucescens in our shop very often but this week you're in luck!

This prostrate, creeping succulent sends out long trailing stems up to 2m that root along their length, producing glaucus, triangular leaves and masses of magenta, daisy-like flowers from spring to summer. It forms a lush carpet and does best in sandy sites and rockeries.

Pigface is a bush food with the red-purple fruits tasking like salty apples or salty strawberries. Roasted leaves can be a salt substitute and juice of the leaves can be applied to insect stings or burnt skin. Early Europeans even relied on the plant to help with combating scurvy!

Pigface is a great soil stabiliser and will tolerate salt spray, strong winds, and drought, which makes it ideal for coastal, low-maintenance, and water-wise gardens. It thrives in full sun or part shade and will need minimal watering after it establishes.

If you're ready to bring this tough and tasty native to your garden come on down to the Hinter Hub. Available in our midi pots for only $4.50. We'd love to see you!

The Hinter Hub is open Monday to Friday 8.30am-3.30pm and Saturday 8am-1.30pm.

RICHMOND BIRDWING BUTTERFLY VINE

We have a healthy crop of Aristolochia praevenosa 'birdwing butterfly vine' being nursed along in our nursery!

This week our crew have been weeding and trimming, to prevent the vines from clinging on to each other. They are reaching for the sky, and ready to be planted out. And we've noticed many of the vines starting to bloom their sweet little tubular flowers!

This large woody rainforest vine loves a well-composted soil and will grow in full sun to part shade. It has large heart-shaped leaves up to 25cm long and flowers late spring through to autumn.

The vine is one of only two vines that the Richmond birdwing butterfly will lay its eggs on and is therefore an important vine for this vulnerable species of butterfly. Once hatched, larvae will spend it's time feeding on the vine, before moving on to pupate.

Come on down to the Hinter Hub and ask us more about this beautiful and important vine, and to take yours home today! We'd love to see you ๐Ÿ’š

The Hinter Hub is open Monday to Friday 8.30am-3.30pm and Saturday 8am-1.30pm.
