A good reminder for all fishos this Easter and beyond, responsible fishing doesn’t end when the line comes out of the water.
Wildlife Rescue Minjerribah shared some confronting images showing hooks inside animals on x-rays, and it’s a proper reminder that discarded tackle can do serious harm to birds, turtles, fish, and other wildlife.
Please do the simple things:
Take your old line, hooks and broken gear home or use the tackle bins.
Don’t leave baited hooks unattended.
And if you see snagged or discarded tackle, pick it up if it’s safe to do so.
Let’s enjoy the fishing while also looking after the place and the wildlife that make the island special.
Big respect to Wildlife Rescue Minjerribah and Straddie Vet for the work they do.
Going fishing on Straddie this Easter? Enjoy & take what you need.
And please don't let your discarded or broken tackle inadvertently take the lives of our precious wildlife!
Our Wildlife Rescuers and our Straddie Vets experience first hand, the harmful impacts of discarded fishing tackle regularly - to our bird life, sea life and to our family fur-friends ...many suffering in terrible pain until they die or are rescued for Vet care and rehabilitation.
The team at Straddie Vets recently coordinated the installation of dedicated tackle bins - located all around the island - to help prevent these potentially harmful items from being left to maim and injure animals.
Keep a lookout for them and please use them for your broken fishing tackle...
Keep our wildlife safe and keep Straddie alive and bustling with nature.
