It is with sadness that we have heard from Suzanne Caldwell of the passing of her mother Margaret, yesterday 20 April 2026. Margaret was 88.

Pat and Margaret oved from Newcastle to Picton in 1963 when Pat was appointed the Clerk of Petty Sessions. The young family lived in the log cabin in Carlton Road, Thirlmere. Pat studied law at night and qualified as a solicitor in 1966. At that time a solicitor named RAO Martin would visit Picton and Tahmoor once a week – Pat worked for RAO Martin (no relation to Peter Matin who was later to become a partner in CMC) and the practice was for a time called “RAO Martin & Caldwell”.

Later practicing on his own from 20 Menangle Street West, Margaret was his first secretary, doing the typing, keeping the books as well as running the family home and caring for their four children, Michael, Suzanne, Jennifer and Stephen. In a letter from Pat in 2000 regarding his career, he paid tribute to Margaret “… I am and will be eternally grateful for the effort she made in all things.”

The family lived in Struan Street Tahmoor and then built a home on acreage in Glengarry Road Bargo.

Margaret was very involved with many community organisations in Picton and Tahmoor. Pat retired from the firm and was appointed a local Magistrate, his last appointment at Ballina.

Some years prior to Pat’s death he and Margaret moved to Brisbane to be nearer daughter Suzanne.
Sadly, two of their children, Michael and Jenny, predeceased their parents.

Pat died in September 2023

Our sincere condolences to Margaret, Suzanne, Stephen and families.
