Play With Your Kids The aim of our program is to enhance relationships between parents and children so that it can be an enjoyable experience for both parent and child.

Play With Your Kids is a program managed by the Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre and funded by the Department of Education, Training and Employment. Qualified staff work together to provide you and your children with opportunities to learn through play in a safe and supportive environment. Our playgroups offer parents of children 0 to 5 years an environment where they can network with other parents, share ideas and experiences about parenting.

PWYK Friday Playgroup – Welcome to Hervey Bay! 💛

Happy Fantastic Friday! 🌈 We finished the week with a wonderful day of creativity, discovery and learning through play as our little explorers celebrated our beautiful home, Hervey Bay!

🐛 Bug Life Adventures – Where is the green grasshopper? The children explored the fascinating world of bugs and insects, sparking curiosity and discovery.

🌳 Springtime Art – Our little artists celebrated the season by creating colourful spring tree artwork.

🦘 Sorting and Matching Fun – Aussie animals, fruit and dinosaurs helped the children practise colour recognition, sorting and matching skills.

🗺️ Welcome to Hervey Bay! – Working together, the children created a collage map celebrating our beautiful bay and its attractions. What a wonderful way to explore our local community!

🏖️ Fraser Coast Sand Play – Colourful sand provided opportunities for sensory exploration and creative play.

🌍 Around the World – Using atlas maps and a globe, the children discovered animals from different parts of the world.

🌼 Little Hands, Big Ideas – Playdough stars and flower patterns encouraged creativity and fine motor skills, while sheet cubby houses inspired imaginative play and teamwork.

💛 Through play, our children continued developing their communication, social skills, creativity and understanding of the world around them.

What a fantastic way to finish the week! Thank you to all our families for being part of our PWYK community. We look forward to more adventures, discoveries and fun together next week!

🔧🌸 PWYK Playgroup Wrap-Up – Imagination Play! 🌸🚗

What a wonderful day of creativity, exploration and imaginative play at our FCFK’s session with our Sarina Russo Parent Pathways Program partnership on Thursday!

🌳 Springtime Creations – The children decorated trees with colourful leaves, blossoms and beautiful frangipani flowers.

🚜 Zoom, Zoom! – Little lawn mowers were busy cutting the pretend grass, while drums brought plenty of music and movement to the room.

🐛 Nature Explorers – The children investigated bugs and insects at our nature table and discovered that tree bark feels hard to touch.

🧱 Building Big Ideas – Prickle blocks became buses and long trucks, while interactive Disney storybooks brought stories to life with exciting sounds.

🍓 Picnic Time – We enjoyed morning tea together, with strawberries proving a favourite!

⭐ Good News Story: Mia’s Mechanic Workshop! 🔧

Miss Mia opened her very own mechanic workshop! The children used pretend spanners and hammers to fix motorbikes before working together to repair the lawn mowers. With a little teamwork and plenty of imagination, the engines were running again – broom, broom! Off they rode around the room on their freshly repaired bikes. 🏍️

💛 Learning Through Play

Through imaginative play, the children practised cooperation, communication, problem-solving and social skills while learning and having fun together.

🤝 Thursday Partnership Sessions | 8:30–11:00am

Our Thursday sessions alternate fortnightly between our Sarina Russo Parent Pathways Program and the Australian Breastfeeding Association, giving families opportunities to connect with additional support, information and services.

Tuesday Learning Sessions at PWYK! 🌈

What a wonderful Tuesday of learning through play we had at PWYK! Our families enjoyed three fun sessions filled with creativity, experimenting, movement and plenty of laughter. 💚

🌴 Session 1 | Welcome to Hervey Bay
8:30–10am | Ages 0–3
Play-based learning through child-led and educator-supported play.

We explored what makes Hervey Bay special by creating our own Welcome to Hervey Bay sensory bags. The children collected natural materials from outdoors, including sand for the beach, leaves for the trees and water for the ocean.

And the best part? We could choose our own ocean colour! 💜 Purple was definitely the favourite, while some children simply couldn’t choose and went with ALL the colours! 😂

We also created our own Welcome to Hervey Bay collages using loose parts. With no right or wrong way to create, children could use their imagination and design their own vision of Hervey Bay.

💧 Session 2 | Sink or Float
10–11:30am | Ages 4–8
School readiness through play, supporting confidence and skills for school.

Time to get experimenting!

We filled buckets with water and tested all sorts of objects to see what would sink and what would float. Feathers, LEGO, paint, glitter and pom poms were all put to the test!

We even discovered that pom poms will eventually sink when held under the water because they absorb the water. What a great little science discovery!

The children explored cause and effect, trial and error, movement and problem-solving as they tested their ideas.

🎵 Session 3 | Music & Movement – Water Play Twist!
11:30am–1:30pm | Family Learning
Learning opportunities for parents and carers, with educators supporting the children. Some sessions include children learning alongside their parents/carers.

We took music and movement outside and added a very fun twist… water!

Shoes came off, the music went on and the children danced in the water. Then came the ice cubes! 🧊

Our favourite song was If You’re Happy and You Know It, but instead of simply stamping our feet, we jumped, splashed and got VERY wet! 😂

Through music and movement, the children developed physical coordination, language, memory and social confidence while having a great time together.

🎨 A Special Thank You!

A huge thank you to MACE - Wide Bay for generously donating a whole container of art supplies to PWYK! We put them straight to good use on our craft table, creating some beautiful artwork. Even better, the children were able to take their own little art packs home to keep creating. 💚

Happy Public Holiday from HBNC!

Just a friendly reminder that our centres and team are taking a short break today to spend time with family and loved ones for the King’s Birthday holiday.

Today we welcomed families to Rock Painting at HBNC, and what a creative morning it was!

Our talented young artists transformed ordinary rocks into colourful works of art, including:
📺 Characters from their favourite ABC kids' TV shows
🏠 Nina's creative block houses and towers
🥚 Easter pumpkin eggs
🐱🐶 Animals such as cats and dogs
🐞 Insects, including ladybugs
🍓🍅 Healthy foods like avocados, eggplants, strawberries, blueberries and tomatoes
🌸 Beautiful plants and flowers

It was wonderful to see the children's imagination, creativity and artistic skills on display throughout the session.

👏 Well done to all our young artists, and thank you to everyone who joined our Play With Your Kids (PWYK) School Holiday Program over the past two weeks. We hope you've enjoyed the fun, learning and connections made along the way.

Happy King’s Birthday Long Weekend from all of us at HBNC!

Whether you’re taking time to relax with loved ones, enjoying our beautiful Fraser Coast, or gathering around the screen for the NRL Grand Final, we hope your long weekend is filled with connection, warmth, and laughter.

Please look after one another and stay safe over the break. Remember, a strong community is built on kindness and looking out for our neighbours!

Service Update:
Our centres will be closed on Monday, 5th October for the public holiday. We look forward to welcoming you back during our usual operating hours on Tuesday, 6th October.

🏃‍♀️🎉 A Hive of Activity at The Hive! 🐝💚

What a fun-filled day we had at The Hive, turning the space into our very own indoor play centre! There was something for everyone, and we certainly kept busy!

🧗‍♀️ Climbing, Sliding & Exploring!
The rock wall had us finding our way along, with some little people needing a helping hand… while a few of our educators were still stuck at the bottom! 😂 The giant slide maze was perfect for climbing, exploring and playing hide and seek in the tunnels.

🚲 Let the Games Begin!
We cooked up special dinners in the home corner, zoomed around on bikes and scooters, shot some hoops on the basketball court (PWYK basketball team, anyone? 🏀☺️), and enjoyed mini soccer, Twister and table football.

Table tennis was another adventure, although we seemed to spend more time chasing the ball than actually hitting it! 😂

💚 Big Kids Helping Little Kids
One of the loveliest things to see was our older children helping the little ones join in and enjoy the fun. After all that activity, we took a quick break for a bite to eat and a drink, and one of our wonderful parents treated us to a story.

🎸 And Then… We Started a Band! 🎤
The highlight of the day was definitely our very own PWYK band! We had guitar players, a pianist, plenty of lead singers 😂 and Ilene keeping everyone in rhythm. We might just have some future rock stars in the making!

What a wonderful day of movement, laughter, friendships and making memories together. 💚

🌺🎬 ALOHA, STITCH MOVIE DAY! 🌴🍿

Our families were transported to Hawaii for a special Disney cinema morning at The Tree House: Urangan Community Wellness Centre, complete with a screening of the much-loved Lilo & Stitch! 🌺🎬

🍿 Movie Time!
The children and big people settled in, grabbed their popcorn and cookies, and enjoyed watching this Disney classic together.

There were plenty of smiles, laughs and happy faces as everyone enjoyed some relaxing movie time with their PWYK friends and family.
