Play With Your Kids

Play With Your Kids The aim of our program is to enhance relationships between parents and children so that it can be an enjoyable experience for both parent and child.

Play With Your Kids is a program managed by the Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre and funded by the Department of Education, Training and Employment. Qualified staff work together to provide you and your children with opportunities to learn through play in a safe and supportive environment. Our playgroups offer parents of children 0 to 5 years an environment where they can network with other parents, share ideas and experiences about parenting.

PWYK Harmony Hub and Music & Movement celebrates:

💛 Infant Mental Health Awareness Week 💛

This week (8th-14th June) shines a light on the emotional wellbeing, secure attachment and early social development of babies and toddlers. These first relationships — the way we connect, respond and attune to our little ones — form the foundation for their future mental health.

This year’s theme is “Attunement” — the simple but powerful act of noticing, understanding and responding to a baby’s cues. When caregivers are attuned, children feel safe, seen and supported as they grow.

🎨 Painting Our Feelings
Children chose colours to match their emotions — from happy yellows to excited rainbows and a few masterpieces that showed every feeling at once 😂

🥰 Loved, Safe and Happy
At the collage table, our paper people were decorated with smiles, hearts and emotion stickers. Every creation reflected what we value at PWYK — feeling safe, loved and included.

🍽️ Outdoor Kitchen Fun
Our little chefs cooked up birthday cakes, spaghetti soup and magical milkshakes. The Sultana Bran sensory tray was a hit… and also a tasty temptation for a few cheeky testers 😂

🎶 Music, Movement & Play
Singing, dancing and imaginative play filled the morning as children explored and connected with friends.

💜 GOOD NEWS STORY
We all enjoyed our big group painting outside on the canvas, where the children painted mystery pictures and the adults had to guess what they were. Let’s just say the imaginations were HUGE 😂 and the adults definitely had to think outside the box!

💛😊 Feelings & Emotions 😊💛

FCFK's Playgroup
📅 Thursday 11th June
🕤 9:30am – 11:30am
📍 All Abilities Playground, Hervey Bay

Join us for a morning of exploring feelings and emotions through play, stories, activities, and connection. 🌈

Learning about emotions helps children build confidence, develop empathy, strengthen communication skills, and understand their own feelings as well as the feelings of others. Through fun, age-appropriate activities, little ones will have the opportunity to recognise, express, and talk about different emotions in a safe and supportive environment. 💕😊😢😠😲

Yesterday PWYK FCFK's visited Kal'ang Walbai Gurumuns (Little Joeys Playgroup) which provides a welcoming, culturally safe and inclusive space where parents and their Ghundus can connect, learn, share and grow together.

🎶 The morning began with Indigenous music and dancing, with children and families following the actions and joining in the fun.

🍎 We enjoyed a delicious healthy morning tea kindly provided by Nan, a respected Indigenous community member.

📚 Story time featured Gambay Butchulla Yaa – Together Butchulla Talk Book, read by Educator Melinda. The beautifully illustrated story introduces children to Butchulla language, local animals and the natural wonders of Country across the Fraser Coast.

🧩 Children explored cultural puzzles and pop games, developing problem-solving skills through play.

🤝 It was wonderful to see PWYK and Kalang families coming together, building connections and sharing experiences within the community.

KEY LEARNING OUTCOMES
Community connection, cultural awareness and social development.

GOOD NEWS STORY
While the children enjoyed playgroup activities, parents participated in a cooking class where they learnt how to prepare healthy, affordable family meals at home. It was a fantastic opportunity to build skills, share ideas and connect with one another.

🐛 The Very Hungry Caterpillar Journey

Our caterpillar's adventure continued today at our In-house Monday Playgroup as he built himself a cosy cocoon!

Using recycled cardboard, we created our own cocoons and stamped leafy designs around them with paint. Now comes the hard part—waiting to see what hatches out! While some children suggested a butterfly, others were convinced it might be a dinosaur. 😂🦖

🌊 World Ocean Day

To celebrate World Ocean Day, we created colourful ocean artworks using marine-themed wrapping paper and torn strips of blue paper to represent the sea. The 2026 theme is "REIMAGINE – Beyond the World We Know, A New Relationship with the Ocean."

🐋 Whale Puzzle Challenge

The children put their problem-solving skills to work by assembling whale puzzles and gluing them together.

Good News Story 💚

Miss Jaci introduced a fun matching card game featuring The Very Hungry Caterpillar symbols. We tested our memory skills, matched the cards, and best of all, everyone received a set to take home!

We finished the session by reading The Very Hungry Caterpillar together—and after so many weeks, we're getting very close to knowing it by heart! 📚🐛

🌊 Happy World Ocean Day, PWYK! 💙

We’re so lucky here in Hervey Bay — calm beaches, sparkling water and whales that come to say hello. The ocean is part of our playtime, our memories and our community.

Today we’re joining the global celebration to protect the big blue world our kids will inherit. Small actions make a splash, and families can dive in with simple, fun ideas:

Beach Clean‑Up Play — turn rubbish collecting into a treasure hunt.
Ditch the plastic — reusable bottles, containers and toys.
Ocean‑themed play — books, crafts, sensory tubs and sea‑creature fun.

✨ Kid‑friendly resources: https://worldoceanday.org/resources-type/materials-for-kids/

Let’s raise ocean‑loving kids and keep our beautiful bay thriving for generations. 💙🌊

🌏 World Environment Day 2026 — Family Fun With the Planet! 🌿

At Play With Your Kids, we love turning the outdoors into a giant playground — and today is the perfect day to celebrate the world our little explorers will grow up in.

This year’s theme reminds us that the planet is talking… and families can answer with fun, hands‑on adventures.

Playful ways to celebrate together:

Nature Adventures — parks, beaches, bush tracks… climb, splash, dig and roam.
Eco‑Craft Fun — turn recycling into rockets, creatures and colourful chaos.
Plant Something — seeds, herbs, flowers… kids love watching “their” plant grow.
Tiny Climate Actions — reuse, swap, compost — little steps feel like superpowers.
Mindful Moments — listen to birds, spot bugs, feel the breeze.

Every playful moment teaches kids that caring for the planet is fun, simple and something they can do every day.

Here’s to the planet that gives our kids room to play, imagine and thrive — and to the families helping protect it. 🌱💚
