Every story shared is a reminder of the impact that culture, community and connection can have.

Together, we continue to create safe spaces where young Aboriginal people can thrive, learn and lead 🫶🏾

Sport gives our young people a chance to build confidence, stay active, connect with others, and just enjoy being kids.

We love being part of those moments and creating positive memories for our young people ⛹🏽‍♂️🥊

Over the past few weeks we had the opportunity to tour the Optus Stadium Precinct and shores of the Derbal Yerrigan (Swan River), led by Uncle Nick Abraham.

We are incredibly grateful for the knowledge, guidance, and conversations that helped us gain a greater understanding and appreciation of the significance these places hold.

Thank you to Uncle Nick for sharing your wisdom, experiences, and time with us.

Old Ways New Ways has distributed surveys to a broad range of stakeholders over the past 12 months. To date, we have received 50 completed surveys from various stakeholders.

Responses were overwhelmingly positive and demonstrate the impact of our program on young people and the community.

We are delighted to share some of their feedback.

Recently, some of our young people had the opportunity for Motivation Foundation Try-A-Trade and they absolutely loved it.

They had the chance to get hands-on across a range of construction pathways, learning about safety, civil construction, mining, operating machinery, and even giving concrete work a go.

Hearing one of the kids say “this is actually really good” says it all. Sometimes it only takes one moment like that to spark a pathway forward.

We’re always looking to build on these opportunities so if anyone is in a position to donate steel cap work boots or workwear in any size to support our young people in job-ready programs, we’d love to hear from you via our DM’s.

These words come directly from the family members of our young people 💌

By listening to family voices, we honour the knowledge that guides and supports our young people every day.

We’re excited to introduce one of our Case Workers from Hope Community Services, Ash

Ash grew up in Perth and previously spent 23 years employed as a Senior Youth Justice Officer with the Department of Justice. She has extensive experience in both the Perth Children’s Court and in the Community Youth Justice field, including spending periods in Port Hedland, Karratha, and Kalgoorlie.

Why do you like working at Old Ways New Ways?
“I am passionate about working with young people and no day is ever the same, you can be out in the field one day, at camp the next. Watching the joy in young people’s faces when they get to experience things they may never have experienced before makes me happy.”

How did you end up working in this field?
Ash commenced working in Youth Justice as a 17-year-old as a Youth Support Officer and loved working with young people day in and day out. Ash is passionate about working with young people and helping them reach their full potential.
