Point Peron is now officially recognised on the global stage! 🦈
This stretch of the Western Australian coastline has been internationally recognised as an Important Shark and Ray Area (ISRA), a critical habitat for aggregations of threatened scalloped hammerheads and blacktip sharks.
This recognition was made possible through Dr. López’s .ocean research on scalloped hammerhead aggregations, combined with invaluable contributions from citizen scientists, which together provided the evidence needed to delineate and propose Point Peron as an ISRA.
Over one-third of sharks, rays, and chimaeras are now threatened with extinction, according to the IUCN Red List. Around 75% of these species live in coastal areas like this, where fishing pressure, habitat loss, and climate change hit hardest.
Scalloped hammerheads and blacktip sharks are especially at risk, as they live long lives, reproduce slowly, and exist in low numbers, making recovery difficult once populations decline.
ISRAs like Point Peron play a key role in shaping conservation, informing marine conservation planning, and policy decisions that can help protect these species into the future.
This isn’t just a beautiful place, it’s a vital one 💙
