In Memory of Steven Mattaboni

It is with deep sadness that the WAUC acknowledges the passing of Steven Mattaboni. On behalf of the committee and all members, we extend our heartfelt condolences to Steven’s family, friends, and everyone who knew and loved him.

Steven was a valued member of the spearfishing community through Bluewater Freedivers WA, and his loss is felt not only by those closest to him but by divers and ocean lovers across Western Australia. Moments like these remind us how closely connected our community is, both in and out of the water.

To anyone who is feeling impacted, whether directly or indirectly, please know that the WAUC committee and our members are here for you. Lean on your mates, reach out if you need support, and remember that no one in our community stands alone during times of grief.

***MARCH MEETING***

WA Undersea Club is teaming up with Spearwest for our March catch‑up night and we’re pretty excited about this one. DOOR PRIZE is a weight belt and some weights from Hydrodive!!!

The night is hosted by the crew at Spearwest and the theme is Science of Freediving.

We’ll be chatting about what actually goes on in the body when we dive and why it matters.
Andy Twine will be hosting the night.

Andy is a co‑owner of Spearwest and a freedive instructor, and he’ll be welcoming everyone into the store and sharing his knowledge on the science behind the sport we’re all passionate about.

This one isn’t just for club members. Everyone is welcome, including anyone new to freediving or just curious.

Spearwest will be open for the night, so feel free to have a browse, ask questions, and hang around for a chat.

Get your year long competition entries in!!

Despite how we have run things in the past, we’d like our members to enter their entries as soon as they are caught. If you’ve caught something that you would consider an entry, please get this in as soon as possible!

An entry in the “Best Edit” Video Comp will get you 50 points towards your club champion total, and if you win you’ll get 100 points toward this total!

The annual Albany spear fishing competition has come and gone once again, hosted by our amazing sponsor , we had a safe and injury free event with some amazing fish weighed in by our competitors despite the south coast weather making things a little harder than usual. With the easterly swells pushing in to most of the sheltered bays the water was hazy in some spots but divers reported visibility of up to 15 meters! ⭐️Head on over to our page for the full write up with category winners and prize selections! ⭐️ Thank you to all who came and who made it what it was, especially our barbecue legends Tristan and Andrew for doing the Lords work after a hard day diving and making sure we all had something to eat after ward

Adreno Albany Competition

Big Shout out to Adreno Ocean Outfitters for coming on board and sponsoring yet another competition in our annual calendar. Without our sponsors we wouldn’t be able to hold these events and give away such amazing prizes.
Although the conditions were more challenging than those usually seen for the competition, visibility reached up to 15 meters in areas and some impressive catches were still recorded.

RESULTS

Open 3rd Prize - Winning 2 x $300 vouchers and Two Adreno hats ($60)-
Noah Thorn & Rhys Simpson, weighing 13 species of which 9 contributed to their score of 1732 points.

Open 2nd Prize - Winning 2 x $400 vouchers and Two Adreno hats ($60)-
Shane Robertson & Ash Cooper, weighing 15 species of which 11 contributed to their score of 2,193 points.

Open 1st Prize - Winning 2 x $500 vouchers totalling $1,000, plus Two Adreno hats ($60):
Darryl Piper & Ben Bloxsome, weighing 14 species of which 12 contributed to their score of 2,284 points.

Mixed 1st Prize - Winning 2 x $300 vouchers and Two Adreno hats ($60):
Rory MacLeod & Jessica Mangan-MacLeod, weighing 9 species of which 7 contributed to their score of 1,261 points.

Rookie Prize - Winning a Total Prize Value $300- Big Blue Dive Torch Pack with 327 points went to Leah Shaw

Most Meritorious fish went to Nick Croukamp for his Scorpion fish weighing a whopping 0.95kg and winning him a $100 SW Skeletal Voucher along with a $150 Adreno Voucher and Hat.

Species from a Hat 1 - Boarfish – Longsnout
went to Tyson Greenwood for his offering, winning him a Spearo Taxman Mask kit valued at $103, all the better to hide those handsome features!

Species from a Hat 2 - Goat Fish
Which went to Jose Alcarria, winning him a Spearo Taxman Mask kit valued at $103

Mystery prize went to Reuben Kroeze for a very nice 1.53kg Harlequin Fish winning an Adreno Heavy Duty Catch Bag kit valued at $110.
The nominated Species for the comp was Sea Sweep, (heaviest) which was won by Nick Croukamp with his fish weighing 1.34kg winning himself Nautilux torch and Adreno hand spear with the value of $365.
And last but not least, the prize for heaviest fish of the day went to Ben Bloxsome for his 7.65kg Yellowtail Kingfish. Which Secured him another $150 Adreno voucher and Hat!

❗ Late sign-offs will be disqualified

Registration & Sign-On

All entrants must register via the WAUC TidyHQ website so the committee knows who is attending for catering and safety reasons.

Sign-on is required prior to the event by ordering a FREE ticket on TidyHQ
You must be a financial WAUC member
Sign-on closes at 5:00PM Friday 27th February 2025

If anything changes with your registration, notify the committee ASAP
