Australia has a rich gold story, and you don't have to go far to find it.
Here are 5 places across the country where you can experience it for yourself.
Elizabeth Quay, Perth
A life-size replica of the Golden Eagle sits right in Perth's CBD. Weighing 1,135 ounces, it was discovered in 1931 by a 17-year-old near Coolgardie. The original was melted down by the WA State Government. Further replicas can be found at the Museum of the Goldfields in Kalgoorlie and the Widgiemooltha Roadhouse on the Coolgardie-Esperance Highway.
The Perth Mint
Open since 1899, the Perth Mint lets you watch a live gold pour in the original melting house, hold a large gold bullion bar, see the world's largest gold coin weighing one tonne, and view Australia's largest natural gold nugget collection, including the second largest nugget in existence.
Kalgoorlie, WA
Stand at the Super Pit Lookout and peer into one of the largest open-cut gold mines on earth, 3.5km long and over 600 metres deep. At Hannans North Tourist Mine, you can pan for real goldfields gold and watch a live gold pour demonstration. The Museum of the Goldfields houses gold bars, nuggets and the full story of WA's gold rush era.
Ballarat, VIC
Sovereign Hill is a full recreation of the 1850s gold rush. Pan for real gold in the creek, take an underground mine tour, watch a gold pour, and walk streets lined with costumed characters and historic buildings. An hour and a half from Melbourne. Photo credit: Sovereign Hill
Bendigo, VIC
Central Deborah Gold Mine takes you 61 metres underground through real gold mining tunnels on a guided tour. The city itself is a product of gold rush wealth, with heritage architecture lining streets that once housed some of the richest settlements in the world.
