Volunteers weeks. 2 weeks ago

For the first time, volunteers from Padbury Community Garden and ZaZa's Legacy joined forces for a combined volunteer week, and it was something pretty special.

So many hours were given by people who simply wanted to help. From working in the garden beds, sharing knowledge, supporting community projects, setting up, packing down, and everything in between, our volunteers showed what community is really about.

This year is also a milestone for both groups. Padbury Community Garden celebrates 5 years of bringing people together, growing fresh food, creating friendships, and building a stronger local community.

At the same time, ZaZa's Legacy is approaching its first anniversary. What started from the loss of my son, ZaZa, has grown into a movement of support, advocacy, education, and hope for grieving families and communities.

Seeing these two organisations come together reminds us that community isn't built by buildings or committees. It's built by people. People who show up. People who care. People who give their time when nobody is watching.

To every volunteer who helped this week, thank you. Your contribution makes a difference far beyond the hours you give.

Here's to 5 years of Padbury Community Garden, 1 year of ZaZa's Legacy, and many more years of growing, supporting, and strengthening our community together.

Big News for ZaZa’s Legacy

What started as a conversation has now become real action.
Because of the advocacy, awareness, and community support behind ZaZa’s Legacy, we are incredibly proud to share that the message is now reaching the mining and industrial sector.

Thanks to a group of passionate and courageous OSH advisors who saw the importance of being prepared for choking emergencies, mine and industrial sites in Jandakot, Kewdale, Brisbane, Adelaide and Rome have answered the call and committed to installing LifeVac devices.

This is more than placing a device on a wall,it is about protecting workers, visitors, contractors, families, and communities. It is about making sure that when seconds matter, people have another option available in a choking emergency, from schools and community organisations to workplaces and now the mining industry, the ripple effect continues to grow.

To every OSH advisor, safety leader, manager and champion who has helped make this happen — thank you for leading with courage and putting people first.

ZaZa’s Legacy was built on the belief that one conversation can save a life.
Today, that conversation is reaching worksites across Australia and beyond.
From Perth to Brisbane, Adelaide to Rome, the message is simple: every life matters.

💛 BIG NEWS FOR OUR SCHOOL COMMUNITIES 💛

Through an amazing partnership with Bendigo Bank, ZaZa’s Legacy has selected the following schools and colleges to receive a FREE LifeVac anti-choking device as part of a community pilot project focused on helping protect children in choking emergencies.

More than 50 schools across Western Australia have already installed LifeVac devices, helping create safer environments for children and giving staff and families extra peace of mind during emergencies. In 2025 alone 4 lives saved due to have lifevac available

We are now inviting P&C members, school communities and local families from these areas to connect with us 🙌

Schools selected:

• Ellenbrook Primary School
• Aveley Primary School
• Aveley North Primary School
• Ellen Stirling Primary School
• Henley Brook Primary School
• Arbor Grove Primary School
• Brabham Primary School
• Maarakool Primary School
• Malvern Springs Primary School
• Upper Swan Primary School
• Anne Hamersley Primary School
• Herne Hill Primary School
• Dayton Primary School
• Caversham Primary School
• Caversham Valley Primary School
• Moorditj Noongar Community College
• Ellenbrook Secondary College
• Aveley Secondary College
• Bullsbrook Community Kindy
• Bullsbrook College

• Central Midlands Senior High School
• Moora Catholic Primary School

If you are a:
P&C member, Parent, Teacher, School staff member, Local community supporter

please reach out to our organisation and help us spread awareness across your school community.

LifeVac is currently the only anti-choking device approved by both the TGA and FDA. It is designed to be used in a choking emergency when standard choking first aid has not worked. It is not a replacement for CPR or First Aid training.

Once a school is involved, the ZaZa’s Legacy team will attend the school and provide a demonstration on how the device works and how it can be used during an emergency situation.

This is more than a device. It’s community helping community

If this pilot project is successful, we hope to expand across even more WA schools and communities in the future.

When ZaZa passed away and it came time to organise his funeral, I honestly couldn’t believe how bad the system was.

You’re already shattered, running on no sleep, trying to process the worst thing that could ever happen to you — and then suddenly you’re hit with pressure, upselling and massive price tags.

I was getting quoted anywhere from $15k to $20k plus. Some places had all these confusing package deals, others added things on bit by bit until the price blew out. Half the time you don’t even know what’s essential and what’s just another mark-up.

One funeral director told me if I really loved my son I should buy the most expensive casket with gold handles. Another basically said, “You’re grieving mate, I’ll just choose the expensive one for you.” One even suggested a vampire-style casket.

I’ll never forget that.

No family should be made to feel guilty or pressured into spending money they don’t have while planning a funeral. You shouldn’t have to go into debt just to say goodbye to someone you love.

After everything was done, I promised myself I’d speak up about it.

I know my experience wasn’t unique either. So many families shared the same stories. That’s why I was proud to put forward written feedback to Consumer Protection WA alongside many other grieving families.

Today I’m genuinely glad to see the WA Government announce the Funeral Pricing Code of Practice will continue.

This is a massive step.

Now funeral directors have to clearly display prices publicly, provide itemised quotes before agreements are signed, and show a basic funeral package so families understand the minimum costs upfront.

That transparency matters.

Because when people are grieving, they deserve honesty — not pressure sales.

No family should be financially smashed at the worst moment of their life.

Big thanks to all the families who spoke up and pushed for change. Your voices mattered.

Unapologetic Griever — One on One My 3am Thought

People ask me what grief has taught me?

The truth is… it taught me things I never wanted to learn, I thought I understood loss. I thought I was prepared, but that was a joke.
Nothing prepares you for the way grief enters the body.

The panic attacks that come out of nowhere.
The exhaustion that sleep never fixes.
The way your chest hurts so deeply you genuinely think you’re having a heart attack.
The way your body clenches while you sleep, waking with your hands so tightly curled you have to force them open.

Nobody tells you grief is physical.
That sorrow can live in your muscles, your breathing, your nervous system.
That your body carries heartbreak just as heavily as your mind does.

Grief is like the ocean after a storm.
In the beginning, it’s everywhere. Waves crashing without warning, pulling you under when you’re already struggling to breathe. Every part of your life feels soaked in loss. You try to steady yourself, to rebuild some sense of normality. And for awhile, it seems like the waters have calmed.

But then one day, a song plays, a scent drifts past, or a memory catches you off guard, and suddenly the tide returns. A wave rises out of nowhere and reminds you of what you lost.

It never fully disappears. The waves just change.
They become quieter, softer, less violent.
You learn how to float instead of fight.
You learn how to carry the ache gently instead of fearing it.
And years , months, weeks, days , minutes later when the tide rolls in again, you may find yourself smiling through the tears. Maybe even laughing at a memory that once shattered you. Because grief was never only about pain. It was always about love. About connection. About someone who mattered deeply.

Eventually, something will catch your attention… a photo, a favourite song, a familiar scent… and instead of falling apart, you’ll feel warmth.
That’s the quiet truth about grief,It stays with you, but it changes,It becomes part of your story, a soft tide moving through your soul…a reminder that love never truly leaves us.

Few months ago we officially launched ZaZa’s Legacy Choking Prevention Australia a moment filled with love, heartbreak, hope and purpose.

I want to sincerely thank Mayor Linda Aitken for not only attending our launch, but for being a true champion for child safety, community awareness and meaningful change across the City of Wanneroo.

Hearing the Mayor speak about our beautiful boy, Zaire ‘ZaZa’ Bwoga, and the importance of taking action in choking emergencies meant more than words can explain. As a healthcare professional, mother, grandmother and community leader, her compassion and leadership shone through every word she shared.

When ZaZa tragically passed away following a choking incident at Iluka Foreshore Park in 2024, our world changed forever. In the middle of unimaginable grief, we made a promise that ZaZa’s life would continue to make a difference.

Today, because of advocacy, awareness and the support of leaders like Mayor Linda Aitken, the City of Wanneroo now includes LifeVac devices alongside portable defibrillators in many public buildings — helping create safer spaces for families and children throughout our community.

This is only the beginning.

ZaZa’s Legacy is about turning pain into purpose, raising awareness around choking prevention, supporting grieving families, and fighting for life-saving resources in schools, playgrounds, sporting clubs and public venues across Australia.

To everyone who attended our grand opening, shared our story, donated, supported or simply stood beside us — thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

And to Mayor Linda Aitken, thank you for your leadership, your compassion, and for helping champion a future where more lives can be saved.

Huge update for ZaZa’s Legacy at Grill’d Local Matters!

We’ve just found out that ZaZa’s Legacy-has been picked for the Local Matters program** at not one, but TWO Grill’d joints for the whole month of May

You can now support us at:

📍 Grill'd Karrinyup
📍 Grill'd Hillarys

So whether you’re cruising through Karrinyup, down near Hillarys, catching up with mates, taking the kids out, or just hanging for a decent burger you can back ZaZa’s Legacy while grabbing a feed

In a bittersweet but really special moment, we’re also alongside our sister charity Padbury Community Garden

Here’s how it works when you head into either Grill’d during May 2026

Grab yourself a burger or feed
You’ll get a token with your order
Chuck your token into the ZaZa’s Legacy jar
And if you can, throw one towards Padbury Community Garden too

And honestly, while you’re there, give the other charities a bit of love as well. At the end of the day, the community’s the real winner.

Seeing locals get right behind causes that actually make a difference has been bloody unreal already. From smashing out 400+tokens in the second week, to people spreading awareness and backing our mission — it genuinely means the world to us.

Every burger, every token, every yarn helps us keep pushing for choking prevention, education, awareness, and support for families through ZaZa’s Legacy

Good burgers, good people, good causes.
That’s what Local Matters is all about

I had the privilege of being invited to Parliament House to speak passionately about choking prevention, the work we are doing through ZaZa’s Legacy, and the importance of education, awareness, and emergency choking devices like LifeVac, few months ago

It was an honour to be welcomed by Liam Staltari, Opposition shadow minister for Education, and Libby Mettam deputy leader shadow minister for Health

What made that day so powerful was knowing that real conversations are happening. Conversations about how we can better protect our kids. Conversations about prevention. Conversations about whether one day, devices like this could potentially be available in schools across WA as an extra layer of emergency protection when every second counts.

As a father who has lived the unimaginable, this is bigger than politics to me. I’ve always said this is bipartisan — because choking does not discriminate, and protecting children should never depend on political sides.

Importantly, LifeVac is NOT a replacement for first aid or CPR. First aid always comes first. These devices are designed only as a last resort if standard choking protocols fail.

Walking through Parliament that day was emotional. Knowing that ZaZa’s story, his legacy, and our mission are being heard in the very place where decisions and change can happen… that meant everything.

If sharing our pain can help save even one life, then we keep going.
