We’re incredibly proud to share that Umbrella Multicultural Community Care Services has been selected as a finalist in the 2026 Bayswater Business Awards – For-Purpose of the Year category! 🎉

This recognition means so much to our team. For more than 25 years, Umbrella has been committed to supporting multicultural seniors to remain connected, independent and valued within their communities.

Being named a finalist is a reflection of the dedication of our staff and volunteers, the strength of our community partnerships, and most importantly, the trust placed in us by the seniors and families we support every day.

Thank you to the City of Bayswater for this wonderful recognition. We’re honoured to be recognised alongside so many organisations making a positive difference in our local community and look forward to celebrating at the Awards in October.

Introducing Jacinta!

With a rich cultural heritage and a lifetime of community involvement, from supporting Lions initiatives to joining Umbrella's Aged Care Volunteer Visitors Scheme (ACVVS), Jacinta has always believed in the power of giving back.

After returning to Western Australia, Jacinta wanted a meaningful way to connect with her community. As an ACVVS volunteer, she visits older adults in residential aged care, turning simple moments into lasting friendships based on trust, listening, and companionship.

At Umbrella, we warmly welcome the Australian Government’s decision to extend the Commonwealth Home Support Program (CHSP) as a standalone program through to 30 June 2029! 💙

This long-awaited announcement brings vital security to around 1,300 providers like us, and certainty to over 830,000 older Australians that essential, entry-level care will continue uninterrupted.

Preserving CHSP as a standalone program protects the preventive, community-focused support that helps so many older adults stay independent in their own homes.

We are grateful for the strong, collective advocacy across the aged care sector that helped secure this outcome, and we look forward to continuing to deliver quality CHSP services.

We’re proud to officially launch Connecting Cancer Care.

This new two-year project is focused on making cancer information easier to access, understand and trust for people from diverse communities.

For many people, navigating cancer information can be difficult. Language barriers, unfamiliar health systems, cultural beliefs, stigma, privacy concerns and overly clinical information can all make it harder to understand cancer prevention, screening, early detection and where to go for support.

Supported through Cancer Australia’s Supporting People with Cancer grant program, Connecting Cancer Care will work directly with culturally and linguistically diverse (CaLD), older and LGBTIQA+ communities to better understand these barriers and identify what information people need, how they want to receive it, and what would make cancer information feel more culturally safe, relevant and accessible.

These insights will then help guide the development of new print, digital and multimedia resources covering cancer prevention, screening, early detection, support services and information for families and carers.

Most importantly, the project will be shaped with communities, rather than for them 🫶

We’re incredibly proud to see Umbrella’s work featured by Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) News, highlighting the very real impact social isolation can have on older Australians - and the difference one meaningful connection can make.

The article shares the beautiful friendship between Hana and Wanda, who met through Umbrella Multicultural Community Care Services Inc.’s Aged Care Volunteer Visitors Scheme seven years ago. What began as regular visits has grown into a genuine friendship built around laughter, music, dancing and shared connection.

For some older people, a visit, a walk, a cup of tea or simply having someone to talk to can become one of the most meaningful parts of their week.

As our CEO Borhan Milani shared with ABC News, even one or two hours of companionship can completely change someone’s outlook and give them something to look forward to.

With demand continuing to grow, we are always looking for people who would like to make a difference through volunteering.

As Hana so beautifully put it: “You will gain more than you give.”

Hana Byambadash volunteers with a free program in Perth that aims to stave off old-age loneliness, a pervasive condition that is linked to dementia and other diseases.

Last week, Umbrella had the pleasure of visiting Menora Masonic Retirement Village for a tailored information session with residents about navigating the aged care system and understanding the supports available to help people remain living independently at home.

Umbrella’s Support at Home - Intake Advisor, Bruna, and Manager, Grants, Partnerships and Engagement, Ella, spoke about the aged care journey, how to get started, and Umbrella’s Home Support Services, including the transition to the new Support at Home program.

It was a great opportunity to answer questions, provide practical information and help make what can sometimes feel like a complicated system a little easier to understand.

We’re looking forward to continuing these tailored community visits across Perth.
