Black Hawk Accident – 30th Anniversary Commemoration
On 12 June 1996, two Australian Army S70A Black Hawk helicopters from 5 Aviation Regiment collided during a counter-terrorism training exercise with the Special Air Service Regiment (SASR) at the High Range Training Area near Townsville, Queensland.
Both aircraft crashed and were rapidly engulfed in flames. The situation was further complicated by the presence of live am******on and explosives onboard.
Despite the extreme danger, soldiers and aircrew immediately risked their own lives to rescue survivors, recover the fallen, and provide medical assistance under the most hazardous conditions.
The accident claimed the lives of 18 Australian men from the SASR (15) and 5 Avn Regt (3).
It remains one of the most significant peacetime military tragedies in Australian Defence Force history.
The extraordinary courage, selflessness and professionalism displayed by those involved in the rescue efforts were recognised through numerous Australian Bravery and Defence honours, including:
3 Star of Courage (SC)
3 Bravery Medals (BM)
2 Commendations for Brave Conduct
4 Chief of the Defence Force Commendations
2 Chief of Army Commendations
These awards recognised acts of exceptional bravery performed in the face of intense fire, exploding am******on, and grave personal danger, as personnel repeatedly entered burning wreckage to rescue survivors and recover their fallen comrades.
Thirty years on, we remember the 18 men who lost their lives and honour all those who responded with courage, determination and selfless service on that tragic day.
