Tuesday Throwback

Māori’s Idol was a true legend of harness racing in Australia. For his first start at Globe Derby Park in October 1975, he was floated from his hometown of Marnoo to Adelaide (484 kilometres).

In the race he broke at the start and lost further ground inside the first lap. With two laps to run he was more than 250 metres tailed off. At the bell he had reduced that to 80 metres. Slipping into top gear he maintained a powerful burst and surged away to win easily.

That was the first of 40 wins recorded by the Māori’s Idol. During that time he equalled Lucky Creed’s record of 24 successive wins.

There were plenty of twists and turns in the great trotter’s illustrious career. It looked like Maori’s Idols career was over after he broke badly at Moonee Valley in December 1978 and was officially retired. Then he made an unexpected return 32 months later at Moonee Valley. The crowd turned out in their thousand to see the champ overcome a 40-metre handicap and a lack of racing to record his final victory.
