This week is Orthoptics Awareness Week!

Orthoptists play a vital role in eye health, vision care and improving quality of life.

At SensesWA, our Orthoptists support people living with permanent vision impairment and low vision, where glasses alone are not enough.

We celebrate our Orthoptics team and the difference they make every day!

Why choose a SensesWA Orientation and Mobility Specialist?

Because navigating the world can look different for everyone, and the right support can make a meaningful difference.

At SensesWA, our highly trained specialists work alongside people with visual or hearing impairments to build confidence and independence in everyday movement.

We provide personalised guidance that is tailored to each individual’s goals, routines and environment.

Learning takes place in real-world settings, both indoors and outdoors, so skills are practical and directly relevant to daily life.

It’s more than mobility support, it’s about helping people move through their world with confidence and independence.

Today on Global Accessibility Awareness Day we recognise the importance of creating a more accessible and inclusive world for people with disability.

For people who are deafblind, access to information and communication is one of the biggest barriers to independence and participation.

When content isn’t accessible it limits connection and everyday access.

At SensesWA, we advocate for more inclusive communication that considers the deafblind community from the start.

Because accessibility is essential, not optional.

At SensesWA, our Orthoptists specialise in the non-surgical assessment and management of eye conditions that affect how people see and function in daily life.

They work with children and adults experiencing conditions such as low vision, eye movement disorders and complex vision impairments.

Their focus includes:
• Assessing how eye conditions affect vision
• Supporting management of conditions like eye misalignment and reduced visual function
• Recommending practical strategies to improve visual access

Through a Functional Vision Assessment, Orthoptists look closely at how vision is working in real-world environments.

At SensesWA, we take a collaborative approach to therapy, working closely across disciplines to ensure every client receives coordinated, complementary support tailored to their goals.

Because many outcomes require more than one area of expertise, our therapy teams work together to look at the full picture.

By bringing together specialist expertise, we can provide more holistic support and better outcomes for the people we work with.

Good communication starts with small actions.

Always approach from the front, within the person’s line of sight. Avoid approaching from behind or the side.

Because every deafblind person is different, it’s important to ask how they prefer to be approached and supported.

You might try sign to them as you approach, speak and sign at the same time or gently touch their shoulder to gain attention.

Once you have their attention, introduce yourself clearly by name.

Be patient, and allow time for the person to respond.

Taking the time to communicate in a way that works for the individual helps build trust, confidence, and connection.
