While the overall reach of Donor Heroes Night has been obove expectation achieving over 220,000 views, and the participation on the night across several pages vey strong. DFA was a little surprised at at the low number of comments on this Page during the Event on the night.

That aside, feedback is sought as to how you, our followers found the 18days leading up to and including the Event. What was of most interest and involvement; the various videos, media releases, donor family stories etc. Did any of you visit our DFA website and if so was it of interest/help in supporting Donor Heroes Night.

Thank you again and we look forward to receiving comments.

Donor Heroes' Night has now drawn to a close - and what an event it was.

The first 17 days of May were all about getting the word out about DHN on 18th May and engaging with donor Families, recipients, and the Australian public, resulting in an overwhelming response of 220,000 visits to OUR DFA Group page.

From this base, 11,000 actions in the form of likes, comments, shares and views stimulated some of the most passionate, heartfelt, and moving dialogue between the various groups.

The event also highlighted the need for such self-expression, which in turn reinforced the importance of organ/tissue donation and transplantation within Australia.

DFA was formed in 2013 with the purpose of providing Care,Support, Advocacy & Education, involving donor family membership and Recipient assiciate membership, and currently has over 1,000 members.

If DHN has encouraged you to become more involved, then visit www.donorfamiliesaustralia.org and register under Contact.

Thirty-three years ago, my son Ben became a hero.

He was just a boy then, when failed surgery lead us to donating his kidneys to a middle aged man on dialysis and a young 12yr old girl his heart and lungs. He would have been 43 this year, and yet his spirit hasn’t aged a day.

He’s been the driving force behind a journey that has taken my wife and me from the quiet heartbreak of writing a keepsake for our daughter, Kyla, to the steps of the Sydney Opera House, speaking to thousands at the opening ceremony of the World Transplant Games in 1997.

In the early years, it was about sharing the "human side" of the hospital experience with nurses and writing Ben’s story for Reader’s Digest. But as time went on, that personal mission turned into a quest for national change. Whether it was working with the Red Cross, helping secure $151m in funding through ShareLife, or participating in providing improved support for all Donor Families nationally through Donor Families Australia, the goal has always the same: making sure something meaningful came from our loss.

Today, I’m still at it as the eAdministrator for Donor Families Australia and the Coordinator for Honor Heroes Night.

But if I’m honest, I’m also a bit frustrated.

We’ve spent decades telling people to sign a register, but that’s not where the system is breaking down. Our national consent rate is sitting at 53%. That’s a coin flip. Meanwhile, Tasmania is hitting 76% because they use "Best Practice" clinical methods—the same ones that make Spain the world leader.

We don't need more marketing; we need the government to listen to "experts by experience"—the families who have actually sat in those hospital rooms. We need to stop guessing what works and start implementing the Tasmania model nationwide.

Ben’s legacy isn’t just a memory as are all the Donor Heroes that have followed. It’s a call to do better for every Australian waiting for a second chance at life.

We Celebrate our Donor Heroes and their Families that supported them in their wishes of becoming a donor Hero following their passing. See you on the evening of the 18th May to contribute your comments and don't forget to light a candle and leave your porch light on.

DONOR HEROES’ NIGHT on 18th May 2026

https://www.facebook.com/DonorFamiliesAustralia

Behind every life-saving transplant is a Donor Hero.
For too long, organ and tissue donors have been the "silent few." But at Donor Families Australia, we believe their choice to give the "greatest gift of all" deserves to be celebrated. Being a Donor Hero isn't just about the recipient; it’s about the lasting legacy and the "second chance" they create for others.

Action Step:
Don’t let your wishes be a secret. Honor the hero in you by telling your family your decision today.
