Read the latest article from GGA member group West Midlands Group, covering the Closing the Economic Yield Gap of Grain Legumes in WA Project and covers local trial site yield results from Jim Hamilton, Moora (who also won GGAs 2025 Grain Legume Crop-etition - chickpea category). Read more below:

A 2025 chickpea season produced a 2.34 t/ha on heavy country near Moora which included a failed April establishment, a June resowing, and prolonged waterlogging through winter — with the best-drained sections yielding 3.5 to 4.0 t/ha.

WMG's latest article from the Grain Legumes Project covers the full yield results from Jim Hamilton's trial site, what the treatment comparisons showed around seeding rate and inoculation, and an indicative partial budget putting core-zone margins over variable inputs at $1,190 to $1,320/ha at a $700/t chickpea price. It also steps through the nitrogen story — including what's realistically available to the following cereal.

If you farm heavy soils and are weighing up chickpeas as a rotation option, the 2025 Moora season gives you a genuine data point from a tough year on local country.

Australia’s Southern Rangelands are some of the most variable and challenging pastoral landscapes in the world. Climate variability, rising costs, legacy land condition and large-scale operations can make it challenging to make management decisions and know where new technologies can genuinely add value.

In the latest Dry Season Resources podcast, Richard Marver (Contour Environmental and Agricultural Consulting) and Krystie Bremer (Gascoyne Pilbara Rangelands Initiative Inc.) discuss the Smart Grazing, Stronger Lands project, which will assist pastoralists from Australia’s Southern Rangelands to adopt proven climate-smart decision support tools and technologies to improve grazing management and ecosystem health.
