Nature Reserves Preservation Group 'Bush Carers' Based in the City of Kalamunda, NRPG is a volunteer community organisation founded in 1989 to preserve our native bushland.

Our volunteer Friends groups adopt areas of bushland, to preserve and encourage native flora and fauna species back to the areas. Since its inception, NRPG's accomplishments include having:
- saved DOLA bush reserves such as Holly and Wordsworth Way in Kalamunda from residential development;
- helped develop the City District Conservation Strategy;
- preserved and regenerated bushland reserves; and
- the establishment, and participation in the Community Sustainability Advisory Committee (CSAC). We continue to be involved with, and make submissions on topics which affect our natural environment, including:
- the national wildlife corridor plan;
- the clearing of parts of Hartfield Park for a sport field;
- Directions 2031;
- High Wycombe Stage 3 light industrial development;
- Perth Bushland Plans;
- revision of the City Fire Risk pamphlet to discourage destruction of bushland;
- tree and understorey protection in Kalamunda Shire (reserve, residential and other);
- working with the City to assist Reserve Friends' Groups and start new ones;
- maintenance and revegetation of Native Reserves; and
- Kalamunda Local Planning Strategy

NRPG Members receive newsletters about our work and related events, along with invitations to join us for our information presentation evenings to learn and share ideas.

URGENT - Protect 77 breeding habitat trees!

The proposed industrial development in Wattleup (City of Cockburn) would clear critical foraging habitat, Critically Endangered Tuart Woodlands and 77 potential breeding habitat trees for Endangered black cockatoos. All three species of black cockatoos have been found in the area. The plan to turn this into an industrial wasteland is another cut into the last of the black cockatoos habitat. We cannot let this happen! Takes just a few minutes to make a comment and say YES to a controlled action. Easy steps below:

💔 "A GREAT LOSS": Popular Perth Bushwalk Closed Forever As Mining Expands Near Serpentine Dam!

A popular Darling Range hiking destination has officially been closed to the public, sparking growing outrage over the scale of bauxite strip-mining expansion across Perth's water catchments and native forests.

Self-guided bushwalk platform WalkGPS issued an urgent update warning hikers to no longer attempt the 17km Mount Solus circuit walk. The trail, located in the northern Jarrah forest, has been overrun by expanding mining operations.

"Once was a wonderful traverse across Mount Solus, one of the highest points in the Darling Range," WalkGPS noted. "Now is yet another casualty of bauxite strip-mining expansion. Another example of how adverse 'social surroundings' impacts of the mining are increasing".

"Your Drinking Water": Geologist Issues Warning 🚨

The closure has drawn strong reactions from industry experts and environmentalists alike. Former Senior Geologist Dick Farefam, who spent over 20 years in the mining industry, backed WalkGPS's warnings regarding the cultural and ecological loss.

"Walk GPS is absolutely right about the intrinsic value of this area, not just to the people of Jarrahdale, but to everyone in the Perth metro area and beyond," Farefam stated. "And if that's not enough reason to leave it alone, it's an important part of the Serpentine Dam water supply catchment as well. Your drinking water"

He highlighted concerns regarding water usage in the area, noting that catchment water is being drawn to suppress dust across active mining sites.

Water Corporation Raises Risk Concerns 💧

The trail closure comes amidst heightened scrutiny over mining operations near critical infrastructure. Independent news outlet Boiling Cold previously revealed that Water Corporation identified bauxite mining as "the single most significant risk to water quality in Perth," noting the probability of dam contamination during heavy rainfall events near steep slopes is considered a serious threat.

Despite public environmental reviews and over 59,000 public submissions, trail advocates report that major bushwalking routes like the 29km Balmoral POW Camp to Three Mountains circuit are facing severe disruption or permanent loss. The expansion also poses ongoing challenges for Jarrahdale's regional 'trail town' aspirations and long-term tourism potential.
